hello fellows please help me decide on a system

Recommended Posts

I'm on the verge of buying a new system, based on a dual core processor, I am into CG and I use sketchup 5 for modeling, sometimes 3dsmax, I often use my old Lightscape 3.2 for good daylight solutions, also starting with ARTlantis Ver R, and off course doing 2D post processing with Photoshop.

I have a budget of 1700 $ which were I live gets you the following configurations, of which to choose I find difficult:

1st system (which is my traditional choice) based on:

- Intel 3.0 Dual core (830 chip) for around 466$

- GIGABYTE GA-8I945P Dual Graphic (945P) - DDR2 - ATX (which supports SLI) 210$

- COMPUCASE CI-6a21 400w ATX SUPER MIDI (Black & Blue) TOWER CASE - 110$

- 2X512MB Samsung DDR II - 667Mhz- Samsung Original 210$

- LEADTEK - PX7800GTX TDH 256MB DDR3 MyVIVO - PCX - Retail 684 $

total for P4-D based system : 1680 $

the Second system (after hearing all the praises about AMD, which was unfamiliar to me so far...ive been an intel guy for years) is based on the Athlon 64 +4200 Dual core :

- AMD Athlon 64 (4200+) - Dual Core 512 Cache [939 PIN]- RETAIL - 507 $

- DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D (Nforce 4 ultra) - 939 - ATX - 231 $

- COMPUCASE CI-6a21 400w ATX SUPER MIDI (Black & Blue) TOWER CASE - 110$

- 512MB Kingston DDR PC3200/400 - Kingston Original - 144 $

- LEADTEK - PX7800GTX TDH 256MB DDR3 MyVIVO - PCX - Retail 684 $

total for the AMD system: 1676 $

well?

what would you expert choose? for my upcoming heavy rendering missions? is the DDR memory slower in AMD configuration? whats the best bang for buck?

I heard so much about compatibility problems (AMD wise), is there any truth to those allegations?

I would be a very happy individual when I find answers to these question, in which also lye great deal of speant money.

thank you in advance.

I have AMD and Intel systems and both are compatible with everything I throw at them. The AMD CPU will beat the Intel but the way you have them spec'ed out the AMD doesn't have enough memory. With either system I'd recommend a more powerful power supply.

Why do you want a Geforce 7800? Unless you really care about properly lighting Lara Croft's... rocket launchers... at $684 it's the biggest waste of money in there. It's twice as much money as the computer I just bought. You could have a midrange Quadro for less or save $400 by getting last year's high end Geforce or Radeon x800, then put that money into other parts.

Good deal. You know, when AMD gives the number ratings to their dual-core chips, they're being very conservative - with software that handles 2 CPUs efficiently, like most renderers, the 4200+ will give you over 6000+ worth of performance.

Now use the money you saved on the video card to buy new render software :)
