Vray map displacement

i'm working on a interior dining and tried to place a vraydisplacementmod on the plane as a carpet and adjusted the amount but when i rendered it it floats but the plane is sitting on the floor itself. the plane has no thickness. is this supposed to be the outcome when u add a vray displacement on a flat plane?

and another thing how do i reduce the time i just need a quick render but it took an hour just for this.

try one of this....

apply the displacement af "x" amout , and the shift value, the negative amount of that.....

or better yet, apply it to a chamfered box instead fo a plane......

the render time sounds about right....just mess around with the sub divs values...

For the render times, you might try tweaking your QMC Sampler settings.

If you have access to the help file, take a look at the example page for the QMC Sampler. I typically render everything with one of the bottom 3 settings. The examples show the same teapot on a plane taking anywhere from nearly 9 minutes, to under 30 seconds, depending on these QMC settings. Chances are they're way too high for test renders.

Also, obviously your Irradiance Map settings may be able to be turned down for test renders.

Last (at least so far as my skill level is concerned which is fairly low with Vray), make sure you VRayMtl settings are good - you don't want your subdivision being set too high. With the previous versions I think the default was 50. Now it's 8. If you've brought in materials created in earlier versions, you'll need to adjust the subdivs down to 8 as a good starting point.

Eric thanks for the info. I myself is new to vray or 3dmax for that matter say 2 mos old. I'm not yet that familiar with all the settings specially the irradiance settings but usually i use 16 as my subdivs and it may also be that i'm using a 1.8 Ghz of CPU and 512 ram only. but thanks and i'll try to adjust these things.
