JamesTaylor
how do most people about the copyright issue of using music from CD's such as "cafe del mar"? as its generally a limited audience are just ignoring it?
leed
I have used some looped royalty free music from this site. http://www.loopsound.com You can get sets that go together, loops from 7 secs I just stack them up in QuickTime until it reaches the right length. Even though it is a restricted audience I tend not to risk it. If you are out putting to DVD you will need to out put the music at 48 or 96 kHz, I think, worth checking. lee
Trick
First you'll have to report it at the copyright organisation in your country. If you're lucky you will get approval within 2-3 weeks for your application. The music fees are around €50-70 per 30 seconds video/animation if it's a product/architecture animation and if the music is from some sort of library/collection. If the music is from popular music (the cd's you buy in the store like "cafe del mar") you AGAIN have to pay the same amount per 30 seconds. This is ONLY the starting fee. If you are going to spread more then 50 cd's you'll have to pay an extra €0.50 for each DVD. If you are going to publish the movie on a website, EACH website owner has to pay around €25 per month (for a 3 min movie) and this only if the movie is meant for local use. Rules may have changed lately, but you guess it can get very complicated. Especially if there will be more parties involved. If you plan to release a small amount of DVD's and the movie is ONLY shown on your clients website, I think cost and handling can be very attractive. If however there are more parties involved you do NOT want to be held responsible for music copyright. Be sure to put this in your contract !! Or just hire some studio or individual to do the music for you: gives you far less headaches

JamesTaylor
Trick, if you wanted to use something off Cafe Del Mar, legally wouldn't you need to gain permission from the production company eg, BMG who own the copyright license for it rather than just pay a copyright organisation? or is that what they would do, approach the owner? Trick
Jat10005, In most European countries there is a copyright organisation just for that. They take care of all the permissions with the artist. Actually there are 4 categories of artists: 1. The popular artists: music you can buy in stores. This music always has to be licensed by the Copyright Org. both for the music AND compostion 2. The library artists: music that is provided as library music (http://www.bmgmusicsearch.com, http://www.playmusiconline.com, etc.). This music alsways has to be licensed by the Copyright Org. for the music. 3. The custom artist: music that is composed by an artist that is associated with the Copyright Org. and therefore licensing is done as in 1. 4. The independant artist: music that is composed by an artist that has NO association with the Copyright Org. They set their own prices but DO need to provide some legal form in which they declare their own Usage Rights AND their independancy !!
