John Dollus
I'm going to be up in Brooklyn area near the end of the month for a few days and I'm looking for suggestions on things to do/see. I went up last Winter and did MOMA but got snowed in before I could do much else (16-18"). So, any suggestions?
Ernest Burden III
Staten Island Ferry is a can't -miss, plus walk around lower Manhattan. Times Square on a hot, humid night The Met (Metropolital Museum), especially on a Friday or Saturday Night It's a new MOMA now (architecturally), worth a re-visit The Cathedral of St. John the Divine A world-class dinner (bring your banker) Jazz/blues clubs in the Village Do an AIA/NY architectural tour Sunday gospel services in Harlem walk/bikeride/blade along the westside from about 23rd St all the way down to Battery Park (southern tip of Manhattan. You alreay did the Brooklyn Museum? If not, go. Next to it is the Bklyn. Botanical Gardens (in whose Rose Garden I was married). Coney Island! For the beach, the bizarre little amusement park, the multi-cultural subway ride. Baseball has been berry, berry good to me. just walk around, check out the women. Sawyer
I lived in NY, went to school at NYU before I moved west. NY can get really hot as can California (we have had at least 700 days over 100 f this year I swear) but here they have AC. Not so much in NY. I took my wife there and she lost it, I kept telling her the people are nice but don't expect them to get you cool. She did not believe me till we stayed at a friends and she was really hot. BAM often has really good stuff. I really like Central Park but the whole city is made for walking and its worth it day or night. Funny thing about the city however is one steet is good another less good. So watch it. Also its really easy to spend money there and the people are really good about taking it, keep that in mind especially if you have money and want to give it to people - take it to NY. I love the Natural History Museum. A lot of fun - makes you feel like a kid at a museum but in a good way. Apparently they filmed some movies there. There is a lot of theater there, but please don't go to any plays, I knew some people who were in some plays and they were creepy.
Joseph Petrino
Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan (or back). The views are spectacular at dusk or on a clear day and the old bridge is a marvel to look at. Best freebie in NYC (also the SI Ferry as mentioned before). Don't miss Dim Sum Chinatown either! Ernest Burden III
Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan (or back). Don't miss Dim Sum Chinatown either! In that order. Walk from Park Slope to the bridge, then right on the Manhattan side you go a bit north and hit Chinatown. Overall its a long walk, but one of the finest of any city anywhere. Arnold Gallardo
Dont' forget Bleecker street on Thursday and Friday nights in downtown The city is pretty safe now considering families with strollers go around Times Square at 2am I remember when it was BAD to get caught in Times Square after dark While you are around downtown from Brooklyn don't miss Ground Zero as well as the WFC. They are my favorite Modernist building by Cesar Pelli and oh make sure you look at Philip Jonhson's 'Chippendale building' (Sony building) and his lipstick building. There's lots of Post-Modern building in the city now unlike before of course we don't have Gehry yet or a Michael Graves (this part I am not so sure). Go up Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center to get a nice view of the city in midtown. Be ready to spend quite abit of money there though. Too bad they closed off the observation deck there which was very nice. You can see the Emoiure state and Chrysler building as well as downtown buildings from there. Better with a reservation though to insure you got window seats. Take go good camera/camcorder with you and place it in a bag that does not scream 'camera bag'. I personally use a hiking fanny pack for my photo equipment storage needs.
