Greg Hess
Dell is currently having a steal on Sony's new Dual DVD burner. (Can burn DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and CD-RW) If you haven't heard of this thing yet, its pretty damn cool. Not only does it do 2.4x burns (DVD), but it uses BOTH DVD Recordable standards, thus making it the first truely future proof dvdburner. Here's a link to the site with the deal... www.hot-deals.org In case its down, here are direct urls... http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.asp?Sku=A0060843&spagenum=1&category_id=2999&keyword=A0060843&mnf=&prst=0&prEnd=0&mnfsku=&orderby=&SearchType=AND&customer_id=04&Pa geb4Search=search&page=search%2Easp&icompatid=&instock=0&refurbished= "Price is $313, automatic 10% discount applies when added to your cart, additional 10% discount code B9549BF60B01, and free ground shipping. After sales tax, the price comes to around $266. " -hotdeals.org
Brian Cassil
wow! I've had a pioneer dvd r/rw here at work for not quite 2 years now but it cost over $700! Maybe I'll get one of these for my home computer. (p.s. could you explain or show us a link to exactly what the differnce is between the two dvd formats and what the implication of those differences are. I've heard of them but never really understood them.)
nisus
Good question brian. So Gregg: what do you mean by "BOTH DVD Recordable standards"? tnx nisus
Greg Hess
Here's some quotes... "I read somewhere that the difference is that DVD-R is CLV and DVD+R is CAV. CLV stands for Constant Linear Velocity. It means the disc is read/written at a constant speed. CAV means Constant Angular Velocity. It means the disc is read/written at a constantly increasing speed. CAV reads/writes faster at the outer edge and slower at the inner edge. I know from my days of collecting laser discs that CAV is supposed to be superior, but I couldn't tell you why. It's just what everyone says, and there's no arguing with everyone." -MCronin (cgtalk.com) Its basically two opposing standards. Like beta vs VHS. With DVD+RW being the better standard (to some people), but DVD-RW working on more desktop players (3/4). http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers List of players which will play burnt DVD-RW, DVD+RW. Here's some articles on the subject http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2002q1/dvdrw/index.x?pg=1 http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,61271,00.asp http://www.recipe4dvd.com/infoRW.html And of course a biased as hell site... http://www.dvdplusrw.org/pc/pccomparison.html (Old one) http://www.tech-report.com/etc/2000q4/dvdrw/ Here's white papers on the three opposing technologies. http://www.itpapers.com/cgi/SubcatIT.pl?scid=165 I hope that satisfies your thirst for knowledge. I tried to just give a simple explanation . Ph33r the pool of knowledge you have just opened. Btw, dell deals ends tonight, and they've stopped the coupons. You have to call to redem them now, but only for the rest of today. After that, the recorder is around 320 USD.
