gfa2
Can't decide if I'm done with this or not. I could put some people in here, but I don't know if I want too. I'd like to see what others think. It's max 7 and vray.
Tim Saunders
looks good. if you could find some images of firemen washing the truck that would be killer. any firemen would do though. the shadow of your tree is pretty crisp. have you tried adjusting the vray shadows params? check smooth surface shadows, check area shadows. check box, and adjust the bias as needed. i would marry your grass if i could get away with it. did you use displacement? if so how long did it take to render at what resolution? gfa2
Good idea about the shadows, I wasn't sure if being that crisp looked real or not. I will mess around those settings you suggested. The grass is vray displacement, I rendered it 4000x2800 and I think it took around 4 hours to render (I forgot to check that when I got in to work this morning). This was the first time I used the displacement for grass and I was pretty happy with it. The tile roof and the side walk also utilize vray displacement. Tim Saunders
wow. if 4 hours is all it took i'm impressed. how is your computer set up?
Tim Saunders
oh and one more suggestion. the trees are a bit too... i don't know if dark describes it. but they need to be desaturated and lightened a bit. are they maps or models? if they're maps, just adjust them in ps before adding them to your material editor, or you can adjust the rgb output levels. gfa2
P4 3.2, 2GB ram, WD raptor hard drive. I’m going to re-render it tonight because I am curious about the render time too. I’ll let you know tomorrow.

mwhite
Nice rendering - like the truck. I was thinking perhaps it needs some color - flowers in the hedge plant if appropriate or on the ground. The color pallette seems to need a bit more. The vray grass is impressive. I have used max for my exterior renderings and they come out fine and the times are good. I bought Vray for interiors and also to use on exteriors with the displacement grass primarily. However, after going through many tutorials and tests on a dual xeon 3.2 I have yet to get much of anything that looks good OR renders in an acceptable amount of time. If you would be willing to share your lighting set up or at least the basic parameters it would be greatly appreciated. I would love to be able to have displacement grass in an acceptable amount of time. Especially after investing in the dual processors and software. Need to spend more time I guess. Thanks,

gfa2
wow. if 4 hours is all it took i'm impressed. I was off on my guess on how long this took to render. It was 7hr 23min for 4000x2800 and 46 min for 1100x780. Normally I would use distributed rendering and get it done WAY faster, but I've been having problems with DR on large images (3000+ pixels wide). I spent some time on the Chaos forum this morning...I'm not the only one having this problem, so I feel better, but still frustrated. The problem is some buckets come back a lot darker than others (bad GI calc or none at all?) I put another post out there on that. If anyone has any idea's. http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/showthread.php?t=12107
