gnuhong
Guys, Which one is better for 3dsmax (with lots of polygons) works? Quadro FX540 SGD 599 Comments: Some said that this card is not good, and should choose those card above FX500 series. Does MAXtreme help improve its performace? Anyone use it before? -or- GF7800GTX SGD 900-1000 Comments: This one seems to be gamers' card? But saw in other 3D forums ppl said it performs very well. What do you think? lambros
In general, high end gamers cards will be faster than a low-end Quadro, offering more value than money. You will have to use DirectX though with max, and yes, maxtreme are boost-up drivers. You may also consider buying an ATI Fire GL 5100 at the $500-$600 price range. kris
Buy nvidia geforce 6800 ultra and modify it to quadro 4000. After that you can use maxtreme drivers. You can find instructions how to modify it on http://www.guru3d.com

salf
question: Whats the difference between a "gamers card" and a "CAD-3d app card" ? I mean, obviously theres differences, a gamers card it optimized for games, and same goes fo rthe 3d applicatoin or CAD vid cards, but.....is there really that huge difference?.... I mean, Ive never worked or see some of theose 2000$ or quadro cards, Ive works all my life in regular Geforces, ATI's, S3, etc...type of video cards, and i can wokr autocad 2d and 3d, and 3d studio without problems. AJLynn
The professional cards are generally faster in 3D authoring programs than the gamer cards - of course, YMMV, like Lambros said the high end of gamer cards are faster than the low end of pro cards, but you'll see a big difference between, say, a Geforce 6800 and a Quadro 4000 (which are essentially the same chips, but the Quadro has more hardware OpenGL features turned on and can use custom drivers in 3DSMax). I was getting away with using gamer cards for a long time, but when I started getting more serious and doing more complicated stuff I switched and wouldn't go back. And I've been doing some things now - got a model of Boston going, for example - where a gamer card would just not cut it. I tried to load this beast on a PC in our lab, which is no slouch, with a newish 128MB Geforce card, and it was painful. My oldish 128MB Quadro4 that I got on Ebay for less than that Geforce would have cost was at least 4x as fast.
Zdravko Barisic
FX 540~ MAXtreme/OpenGL 7800~ Direct3D (shaded models w/ textures) the choice is hard, but if you have enough money maybe you should get 7800 FX 540 is not so far good as FX 4000, FX4000>7800

For me, I didnt feel the differences between these two. I once tried switch between these two, both display the same things and quality on my monitor. I use OpenGL though. Wayne Harney
I just finished building a new system. I was going to use my old soft quadroed GF TI4200 that has worked so well for me for years but the new motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot so I was forced to get a new card. I searched the web and couldn't find any firm info on using soft quadro on a newer GF so I went with a quadro fx 540 in order to be sure that I could use maxtreme. (I was already over budget and had to skimp) But I can tell you the 540 kicks the snot out of my old GF softquadro and I was pleasantly surprised. Can't say how it compares to the newer GFs but I thought I'd pass this info on. In my opinion maxtreme is an absolute must so I wouldn't get a GF unless you're sure in can be softquadroed. AJLynn
Guys- Since bootleg software talk is OT on this forum, and softquadro is pretty much the same, maybe for the future we should leave it out of discussions. It doesn't get the same treatment, but it's using 3rd party software to circumvent a protection scheme and get a product for free that the company normally charges for.
