Lighting leaks

How large is your meshing? Radiosity is meshing based and stores light in the vertices of the mesh - if your mesh is not dense enough it will not capture the detail you need.

Also, keep in mind that adding a shelf will mean that your mesh will have vertices on top and bottom of the shelf, and that also causes light leaks. The best solution is to model acording to that.

the mesh for the white wood area is 6". the rest of the scene i think i have it under 2'-0". Not sure i understand how i need to model according to that? does that mean i need to not subdivide the shelf?

Nope, you need to cut a hole in the wall where the shelf intersects it.

6" is way larget than your shelf height - no wonder why you aren't getting soft shadows underneath it. You'd need 1/2" - 2" meshing to capture anything there.

cuting a hole in the wall kinda fixed the problem. I havent tried reducing the mesh size, which was 3" not 6".

Is there a point in having shadows in radiosity? when they are ignored?
