karl zacharias
The Modeling Isn't Bad...but You Need To Check Out The Tutorials Offered On This Site...they May Help You Get Started With The Lighting (i Don't See Any At This Point). Trickster1914
What program are these models from? Are you new to 3d? The houses look fine but your lighting and textures need looking at.
rockrat
Thanks for all the feedback! I'm trying to improve the lighting before I look at the textures. I'm using Lightwave, I've been modelling for years but I'm new to architectural stuff. The 3 previous pics were lit by one distant light and 4 "area" lights set without shadows to try fake GI. Also a bit of ambient lighting. This render is the same with the 4 fill lights and the ambient turned down somewhat, is it an improvement? Pic 2 This is the same render with the fill light turned off, a tiny bit of Ambient and GI turned on Pic 2 I still looks washed to me and the GI seems to get too much kick off the green of the grass. IC
Steve You should give your setup a rethink for ambient lighting. You really have to use radiosity for exteriors or 'fakeosity' using a variation of the Spinning Light set up. If you have FPrime, radiosity will take no time at all. Wrap a flipped sphere round the scene with a HDRI spherically mapped at 30-160% luminosity depending upon the quality of the HDRI. If not, use the light dome technique (you can find info on this in loads of websites.) Area Lights are better for interiors as fill lights. Stick to Distants. Also, the ambient setting is best kept at 0%. The Exteriors Section on my portfolio site has an example of both techniques. The middle one used spinning lights, the bottom HDR. hardnozehockey
I agree with the above comments. Nice modelling, but you sure need some better lighting. You can do wonders with Mental Ray (or VRay, Brazil, Finalrender) with just two lights for exterior renderings. Use a sunlight (or spotlight) and a skylight. In mental ray, just turn on Final Gather, set it up to around 400 to 500. There are quite a few other settings to tweak... please ask if you need any other assistance.
