Curiosity killed the fish

I am about 50% done with this one. It is one of my first radiosity interiors, and i was looking for some pointers (any beyond the following questions are welcome).

I use Cinema4D (very happy with it). There is one light source, and an HDRI sky dome. It still seems to be dark even though I have turned up the luminosity and the Global Illumination on the sky. Should I just keep jacking up this number until I am happy with it, or should I put an light in the center of the room to lighten it up a bit? Any sharing of experiences welcome.

Secondly, I cant decide on a back ground.. there are 4 here. which works best for you all.

Lastly, I do not have the stochastic samples turned up high for progress reasons, but I am getting alot of bleed out of the wall/ceiling connection. how is this fixed or do I just need to render with more samples or higher resolution.

Thanks for the look and comments.

Go for the most left (first) background image, freezing cold yet very nice. The rest is off scale and poor quality, low res.

For the lighting, maybe turn on the lamp. Self-illuminate the lampshade (radiosity should let it bleed against the wall) and put an omni in it (low multiplier 0.25 > bit darker yellow) with shadows turned off. That will light up the room a bit, just enough for this render.

Also, maybe try an 'override' material for the bedsheet, it will soften down the blue-grey. When render the final one, maybe set radiosity quality to 90% with a high filter or change this thread in 'radiosity killed the pic'.

Heres more of why it has its title....(I know the tail is too bright, i'll get that worked on).

I do like the radiosity kills suggestion too.. :D

I think I will also change the material of the bedsheet. It is supposed to be that fuzzy velvet type feeling blanket, but it prolly doesn't work for the scene.

anyways, another WIP. thanks for those first comments.

yes, it is a tail....just put fur on it and rendered, haven't tweaked it yet...subtle eh? ;) Anyways, noticed the sneakers after I posted (argh, nuthin like a pair of clean tennis shoes to drive one mad) I may just do without shoes altogether.....

dennis, you've seen everyone in concert haven't you?

cool idea about the cat n all. it wouldn't be hard at all to make a little water spill with some refraction in the water. you've gone this far, why not go all the way? i don't have experience with c4d, but with my experience increasing the samples helps with those blotches. try bumping it up and see where that gets you.

****glad to see there are some floyd fans out there. I saw them in 86' (or somewhere around there) and in 94' (once again not sure exact year).. amazing shows (the 80's show was much better though). would loved to see them with waters, but did catch the show on TV. ***okay back to the subject. good idea with the spill and i also realized that there should be some water in the bowl too and maybe some small shiny rocks....I have a few more goodies to add to the picture and then hopefully it'll be ready to post on the finished work forum.....any more feedback is welcome

thanks,

Rmaytee; I live in Rotterdam, near the soccer stadium (Feyenoord) and another dome (ahoy) where r&r bands come when they are on tour, having a gig in the Netherlands. I'm 37 yrs old and a musiclover so yes, I've seen a lot of it during the years. Haven't seen ALL of them but quite a few...including Floyd (2X) in '86 (Ahoy Rotterdam) and '91 (Kuip, Rotterdam) with the famous quadriphonic sound-setup. The concert with the flying bed and a huge pig jumping across the audience.

right on tj. look forward to seeing it. i was pretty excited to see your website, but the links in the gallery don't work. they show the info on the projects, but the images do not display. are you still working on that?

Mother, Do you think they'll like this render?;)

Love the concept, and agree with others about more detail, ie water in bowl, maybe rocks, etc. but I feel your composition could be better established with some more thought on the direction of the light for example, maybe hitting the bowl with a nice highlight to draw attention or something... you have come along way and it has potential to be a very nice render if you push it a little more. BTW saw Floyd twice in 94 in MASS for Division Bell tour, favorite band of all time, it runs in my family.

look forward to seeing your updates.

Tim,

Another person I was talking to had the problem with the gallery links. I asked others if they had the same problem and they didnt. It might be an javascript incompatibility of some sort, seeing that I used dreamweaver and made some dirty looking code. (plan to clean it up soon) thanks for the heads up.

More of the cat coming soon. I definitly like the idea of changing the lighting to emphasize some of the bowl and water.

Ok,

I think this is my last post as a WIP. I will put the next one under Finished Work. I will be adding some curtains, some items on the shelves, side table, and window sill, making the rocks and lighthouse bigger in the bowl and floor, and more water on top of the table(including a darker water ring where the bowl once sat.) Please let me know if you see anything else that needs tweeking or you think is missing. It is still not rendered at the final settings, so the bleeding and splotches will go away.

cheers,

tj,

you have seriously come a long way with this image. love the blue wall, love the window sills and header, and the artwork on the walls. it makes it evident that the owner loves his fish and is going to be devistated when he gets home. i'm pretty excited to see the final. on your water spill; just add a slight noise bump, at a fairly large tile so we see a little refraction. oh yeah your using c4d, i'm sure there's a similar method to do what i'm saying.

Is this what you where meaning with the water on the floor? (I rendered at low settings just to test the changes) Also I cant seem to get the water on the table to not be so bright due to the sunlight. Does this hurt the image? if so, any suggestions? I have also made the objects in the bowl bigger and have added faint rings where the bowl had sat for so long....I appreciate all the help with this image..

thanks,

Looking great! two suggestions: 1st, the bowl has lost some definition--see the render you posted on the 3rd--the bowl looks a lot more like a fish bowl and it's shad/reflection in the spill better portrays that. 2nd, the placement of the cat's tail seems to be fighting something compositionally, I think it's just too close to the edge of the spill, maybe move it about 30 pixels to the left, If you have the tail as a layer in Pshop you can move it all over the place trying to find the right feel. The tail is kindof the punctuation mark of the image so it's placement must be just right. I also, dig the pictures of the fish on the wall. Don't be afraid to make the contents (minus the fish) of the fishbowl even a tad bit bigger.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok I think this is the last one before I finish this project. (been going back to it too often cuz I see room for improvement every time, and just need to step away from it and finish, with of course just one more round of touches ;) )

Please give me any final comments or critiques. I would gladly appreciate it. Also let me know if you think this useable for a portfolio piece.

thanks for all the guidance (and appreciation of floyd :D )

I am going to definitely keep the hint of the cat, I may look one more time at how to make it work the best, but then again it has generated many different responses (positive, mid, negative), which may mean, don't do anything to it

....anyways..the window treatment is a variation of a model from

http://www.evermotion.org/

It is part of the Archmodels 2 library. It was actually a larger model with 2 layers of curtains, but I decided that it was overkill and decided to manipulate it. (by the way this is the first library I have bought from evermotion and so far I am happy with it)

thanks again,
