learning about Architecture

hello again

i am a fresh Architecture graduate and trying to gain as much information as i can related to every aspect of professional practice.

1.)I want to learn how construction is done(eg what is made first and what after that and things like that)so that i don't feel lost when i go dor a site visit.

2.)I want to learn the technicalities of an office like preparing aggrements, working out an estimate and etc etc.

3.) i have seen a lot of architects( atleast the ones i have come across) that just do the lighting plan randomly. i mean which light is required where they are least cared about..But i want to know how to work out the number of light fixtures (for eg in a room) required. What type of fixture it should be ( eg cfl, halogens etc.).in brief how to master the lighting design without doing a special course for the same

i know i might be sounding vague to some of u...but i just wrote what was in my mind and would be really glad if i get responses for such nooby questions(if u think).......

thanks

there is an overview of lighting techniques on the erco website (http://www.erco.com) go to the guide section and there is plenty to read. i'm not sure how good it is as i've still to get round to eading it but i'm guessing it will be a good starting point.

in respect to your other two quieries i think that these are usually learnt thro experience of working in architects offices and learning as you go.

good luck

james

The firm I worked alongside with on a bio-genetic lab some years ago sent all their fresh architects out to the field for some time to gain firsthand field knowledge . I've ALWAYS wished designers and specifiers spent more time in the field to see that intent and reality are not always good bedfellows ;)

Maybe you could do the same..find a small project that your firm (or perhaps if you're not employed yet a friendly firm) is currently working on and ask permission (from your firm and the job supt.) and observe and ask questions on what you're not clear on...without slowing the job progress of course. ;)

As far as lighting is concerned I believe there are Lumen standards for certain area types somewhere as I remember seeing Lighting Engineers notes citing such.....now where are they I don't know but someone else here might have that knowledge

Peace
