pailhead
I am definitely buying this laptop http://www.powernotebooks.com/product.php?itemId=699 Sager NP9880 FORCE. ill upgrade it with -WUXGA -3.6ghz -wireless+bluetooth combo But: -Is RAID the way to go? (RAID0) -If it is, is it better to raid two 80gb SATA at 5400rpm or two 60gb ultra ATA at 7200rpm? -if not, whats better, 80gb SATA 5400, 80gb ultra ATA 5400, 60gb ultra ATA 7200rpm Will i benefit much from the speed gained with raid, enough to forget about the safety issue if one hard drive fails. Comparing two raided 5400 harddrives and one at 7200, which one is faster and which one heats more? Also, if i take only one hard, ill save some money so is the quadro card worth upgrading, i never worked on a quadro before. will be using this laptop mainly for Max and some cad utility, and most of the time i should have access to a power outlet. Christopher Nichols
Two things... I would consider PC Torque as a source for the laptop. They are great. I don't think the aid is worth it, and if it fails, it can be harmful. If I had to pick between a raid and a quadro, pick the quadro. Especially for MAX. The dual plane is worth it. I foyu need an extra speedy HD get a firewire raid.
pailhead
So far i've decided to go with the WUXGA, 3.6ghz and 6800ultra. Im still not sure what to do about the harddrives, but i wont raid anything. But im having grave doubts about this whole thing because the laptop + adapter + targus XL backpack will be around 8.5kg. That seems pretty heavy, though, the backpack seems pretty comfortable and has a waist strap which i hope lessens the burden. People keep recommending dell's XPS gen2, but beside those very cool LEDs i would prefer the sager, although XPS is lighter, its not light enough, 4kg is pretty heavy too.
