bigcahunak
Hi all, This is mainly for Greg, as he is "da man" around here, but anyone who knows anything about something is more than welcome to bla bla... I have a 5 years old Dell Latitude (P2 400, 64mb 66mhz bus, with a 14.1 LCD). Question is: what can I do with it. I've been thinking about doing something with it, but not really sure what can be done. Is it possible to replace the board here and get a faster platform? Any 133mhz boards that would fit here? I don't need the latest and fatest laptop, but since laptops prices are so high I'm just looking to see if there is a way to save my old investment... TNX. Greg Hess
big, Best thing to do would be.... 1) Look up the laptop on www.crucial.com. See what the maxmium amount of memory it can support is. If it can support 256 megs, spend the 20-30 bucks and upgrade the ram. 2) With the ram at 256, you can wipe the hd, and do a clean install of windows 2000. Though a 400 is a bit on the slower side, win2k should still run alright...at least at a decent enough level for rom playing, mp3's, maybe a dvd player, or wordprocessing/inet box. The oldest machines I work on at the university are PII 266's, and most of them run Win2k. It takes a bit to load, but once its going, its just dandy. Oh backup your stuff first . bigcahunak
TNX. I was thinking about going the RAM upgrade way only, but since its 66mhz bus... I didn't want to invest if it was going to go through a board upgrade later on. I guess I can try that as I have another laptop like that only at a 100mhz bus with a 256mb (crucial) and a 128mb(OEM) sticks in it.
Greg Hess
1) You can't upgrade a laptop motherboard. 2) Replacement ram for that system would be at most 20-30 bucks. Just look up the exact designation on www.crucial.com. 3) Ram types are usually not swappable between laptops. Its sometimes VERY specific. bigcahunak
I'm working on dual AMD at home and office. All I'm looking for is something for presentation, plus being able to do some autocad and LS (without rendering) while I'm away. I never watch DVD on computers anyway. So I was just looking for that, but I guess that with some delays and pauses I'll be able to do that on the 400. Thanks for everything.
Greg Hess
The 400 with more ram should be fine for most powerpoint presentations. However if you start adding video into the equation, you'll need a system with a bit more umf.
