3dred
DearAll, howdy. I am attempting to create photo-real global illum lighting in an architectural rendering and I am not sure how to proceed. This is something I am new to, so a wee patience would be greatly appreciated. I have Maya 6 Complete and am working on a fairly rich scene. There are a few marbles, some stone, some rich wood, and quite a few windows in the room. Are there any special texturing techniques I need to master before attempting to use Mental Ray to Globally Illuminate the room? Thanks tons for any and all help. Take care. -red

derijones
Have a look at this: http://www.treddi.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=8436 You may need to register to see it (bit of a challenge in Italian!), but it's a good clear English tutorial on setting up lighting for GI / internal stuff. Hope it helps Cheers Deri
3dred
Deri, thanks for the input. I appreciate the help. I'm really scrapping to learn GI in a short period of time and I'm banking on Maya 6 being able to accomodate my visual goals. Take care, amigo. -travis
3dred
Alek, thanks, as well, for your help. Your image looks nice. Do either you, or Deri (if you're reading this too, Deri) have a site with images on it? Take care. Peace. -travis
derijones
Hi You can have a look at my site at http://www.djaweb.co.uk All the images on there were done with Maya/Mental Ray, but they are well off the pace of the stuff you see on this site - I'm only just starting to get my head around 3D rendering after working with 3D CAD mechanical design systems for years on the marine side of stuff. The marine design side of the business is still probably 75% of the core business, so I don't get as much time as I'd like to improve the rendering. Also I seem to get projects where the customer wants a whole housing development done, which cuts down on the realism a lot (at the prices they are willing to pay and the hours I'm willing to put in for that anyway!!). Cheers Deri
3dred
Deri, nice work on your site. I have been interested in marine projects also. I have a friend who's a nautical engineer in Maryland and I'll be contacting him once I've completed this project and I'm on to the pitching part of my new biz. I'm grateful for your help and responses. I am letting you know now, I will more than likely be presenting a few more questions as time goes by. Take care. Cheers. -travis
