JHalton
I've been asked which I want at work but I am unsure which to go for. You here that CRT is still superior.
STRAT
personally i'm still a crt fan. in recent months i've gone through several 'higher end' tft's and, although the picture quality and sharpness was absolutely superb, i found the general colour contrasts/brightnesses rather poor compaired to a crt. the contrasts were just too deep and not subtly controlable enough. this is a major factor for me and why i'm still electing a crt over a tft at this point in time. Yeah, that's how I feel. I really want one, but fear that making the right tonal adjustments to my visuals would be difficult.
lambros
I agree with the CRT superiority in color accuracy, but on the other hand, after 4 consecutive years of sitting in front of two TFTs I cannot spend more that 10 minutes in front of a CRT. The display refreshment rates simply make me dizzy, the image is not really stable.
ShaunDon
Lambros, what refresh rate do you run CRTs at usually? I keep my 21" screens at 85-100hz depending on what it can handle, and it's just as stable as my second screen which is an LCD. I'm definitely in Strat and Dibber's camps -- entirely for color reasons. Having had a CRT and LCD side by side for years, in addition to using a laptop as a second workstation alongside my desktop, the disparity in color is amazing. And oftentimes when our clients come back complaining about the colors looking wrong or an image being too bright, most of the time when we ask them to check it on a CRT and they approve the image as-is. If anyone out there has found a nice flat panel that doesn't suffer these problems, do tell. We would love to bury our CRT dinosaurs, but for now the LCDs create more problems than they're worth. bokkins
my friend went for a flat panel after his crt got busted... so far he's happy working using his new display, besides from being space saving and lightweight, his having no problem with color and brightness. I myself is not a fan of flat displays, but the technology has developed rapidly eversince. I'm planning to have one soon. 19" or 21".
Eric
I just received my new ViewSonic VP201b flat panel 20" LCD yesterday, and I love it! I agree the colors are not as easy to work with - I came from a 20" ViewSonic. I was not able to run the CRT at a refresh rate higher than 75 because the screen just got too blurry. At 75 the screen was wobbly, along with the visible refresh rate. I think the wobble might have been from power cables running next to my screen, but I'm not sure. I can see a potential problem with the LCD. The colors are much more vibrant/rich. I might have a tendency to create images that look correct on the screen, but when they print, they might be a tad dull because I compensated for the increased richness. Bottom line, I love the new LCD, and hopefully I can go home without a headache every day... I purchased it via pricegrabber, and paid about $580 for it I believe. Not bad for 1600x1200 on a 20" screen in my opinion.
angelo
Give it up already on the CRT’s. They are so incredibly out of date. There are some bad LCD’s, but the better (and newer) ones can get so very close to a high end CRT. The trade off in headaches is amazing. Even with a pro level CRT with refresh rates above 85, I still had chronic headaches. A year and a half later on a LCD, and I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like (until I work for an hour on a CRT)! If you are a stickler for soft-proofing color on the screen, get Lacie’s LCD and you’ll never go back. If you can get by with something very close, Dell’s Ultra sharp series are very, very good. They are actually made by Samsung, but cheaper than their MultiSync series. Having a screen that is totally static (and vivid) makes life fun at your desk. radioVOY
Talking about color and contrast tones on LCD, we all know that Apple always have the top of the line in graphics hardware, so if all the new monitors that they are selling now are flat panel, those must have corrected that issue i dont see apple risking their users works with accurateless monitors. By the way is well know that LCDs are less dangerous than CRTs, if all of us spend +8 hours in front of a monitor switch to a LCD is a good choice, Im just waiting to finish to build my dual 275 opteron machine, so i can change my dual 21 CRT for two 2001fp dell's 21" LCD, those has a .255mm of dot pitch and a very good specs. Harjeet Singh
dont know about the latest screens but still prefer CRT for sake of right colors. after working on my compaq 3800 (recent) laptop and the CRT, side by side, i noticed that though the images look good but the i feel kind of color blindness on the TFT. whereas the CRT is always showing me exact colors, and the saturation. i'll stay with CRT for now. Allen
I spend 15 to 20 hours per day on my computer...I know, I really need a life - I would NEVER go back to a CRT. Too big, too hot, too little contrast, too dark. I've got 2-17" Viewsonic LCDs with dual inputs so I've got my two computers hooked up, one to VGA one to DVI a button on the monitors switches between the inputs. LOVE these things - and I got them at a very reasonable price. Good luck and happy rendering...
Crazy Homeless Guy
i use CRT's, but would like to try a LCD for working enviroment. so far, the quality of image vs the price has not made sense. but, the reason for my posting... i have always been slightly worried about how much time i spend in front of the montior, given that CRT's generate some degree of radiation. it can't be good for you. i don't know a lot about radiation, but flat screen don't generate nearly as much. they use a lot less power, so the magnetic field is not as intense. ....or something like that. mskin
I replaced my CRT with LCD and love it. It took me two days to get used to it, but i can look at it forever without getting bloodshot, blury eyes or headaches.

Eric
I guess you're just lucky. I had a 20" viewsonic - over $600 new, being pushed by a Quadro4 980XGL. I had to run at 75 hertz because any higher and the screen was unacceptably blurry, though without wobble. At 75, the screen had a sharp image, but it was wobbly and you could see the refresh flicker. I chose the flicker/wobble over the blur. That was a 1600x1200. Headaches were a frequent problem after a long day snapping lines and Photoshoping. My new Viewsonic 20" LCD is crystal clear at 1600x1200, the wobble is gone, and so is the refresh flicker. So is the unnecessary strain on my eyes. I know colors will take some effort to nail, but I can handle that.
