Asking the question for a friend, so understandly vague

 

she needs to know if there is a way to save out, just the shadows as a

channel, using the default scanline renderer as the thread says!

 

 

I'm on a very short timescale, but any help is much appreciated

Yes, you can do it using "redner elements" tab from render menu.

Just add the shadow element and specify the path and filetype you want.

You may want to use PNG format of TIFF, both with alpha channel enabled.

look at the help topics on "Shadow/Matte" material type. It might do just what you want, controlling the alpha channel as well.
