Odd question....

Does anyone know how much it costs in electricity to render on your PC overnight (in the UK)?

Might seem trivial but I can get reimbursement from my firm if it's costing me more than a certain amount every month.

well, I don't know what it would cost in the UK, but you could easily calculate that.

A decent workstation pc will use a 400W-480W power supply. Of course not all 400W are needed all times, that's an index intended to measure the peak of the current it can supply. Graphic cards do use many watts, but when rendering, they will consume a minimum amount of current. Processors will consume maximum current, mobos too, RAM too, hds will have significant activity, so, it is fair to assume that a mean of 200W per hour will be consumed - that would strongly depend on the kind of processor(s) your system has (tfts or crts will be turned off of course).

Thus, in 8 hours of night activity, 1,6kWh will be consumed. That's 48kWh per month, and you will have to check your local electric company on what this costs. Usually, most electric companies offer lower rates for night use of electric energy, and final rates are calculated on a given climax: first xxx kWh will cost that, the next xxx kWh will cost more (or less) etc. So the cost of a rendering PC will always depend on the total amount of energy consumed by a household.

Well I can tell you this. When I worked from home for Smoothe they leased my computer hardware and office space. I had electrical bills going back a year so I knew how much electricity I used before and after. Even with my computer being on all day, the difference in the bill was so neglegible I did not both to charge for the electricity. It eneded up working out to something like $2-5/month for my dual AMD and all my other equipment.

Thanks Lambros. Very helpful.

Now does anyone know how much sock-cotton you wear out in an average day walking to a printer and back?

Our lawyers bill at 0.05 socks per ream-yard for letter paper, 0.07 for tabloid (should come out roughly the same for A4 and A3 in ream-meters) but we leave out socks in our FTE calculations and write them off as a business expense. Also, need to factor in that lawyers' socks are flimsier and they go through them faster.

thats a great ideal to work with, but what happens in the winter time when peeps start wearing wooly socks and leg warmers? this would throw a hex on the whole thing which, could be disasterous if wrongly calculated :o

Hmmm it's all getting quite complex now.

Thanks Jeff I think you've answered my question. It's just I'm not used to an appreciative boss who is concerned I'm working at home and it might be putting me out of pocket.

Weird!

Strat, you've got the Scots mixed up with the English!

We eat HAGGIS for every meal!

We are partial to a drop of the old white spirit though. It's like whisky but with a wee extra kick (and 1/10 the price).

(Of course I'm joking-DON'T drink white spirit, kids. The hangovers are lethal!)
