maxstart.max is found in your scenes folder. setup up everything from viewport, rendering, and whatever else you can think of then click file, save as, look for the file maxstart.max in your scenes folder and then click save. i am not sure if all your settings will be save but i'm sure most of them will be saved. hope this answers your query.

some of the settings that worked with my maxstart.max: perspective viewport is located at the upper righthand corner, color of my viewport background, safe frame is on, default renderer is vray, snap is on, resolution is set to 640x480 (can't remember the rest because my pc is rendering at the moment). i guess you just have to setup everything you can think of, save and check which settings were saved and which were not.

Hmmm.... I remember seeing this on Vray's forum a couple of years ago, and always meant to go back and search for that thread, but I never did. So, thanks for the tip,

...but, I can't seem to get it to work. My scenes directory in my 3dsMax2009 folder is empty. I tried saving a file there called MaxStart.max to see if it automatically read it, but that didn't work.

I should also note that I have my useUserProfile=0, which may effect how and where it Max for the MaxStart.max file.

Edit:

I figured it out. I have my MaxStart path remapped to a folder that contains UNC shortcuts on the server so I can quickly navigate to all of my projects. I dropped a copy of the MaxStart.max file in that directory. When I launched max, it launched normally, then quickly loaded that file.
