BrianKitts
you have to edit your system's registry to get the max thumbnails to work in windows explorer. Download the attached zip file, extract the file regedit.reg and double click the file. (warning you are editing your registry, so do so at your own risk) works like a charm, but be sure that in the files tab in the max preferences dialogue you have it checked to save thumbnails of the viewport when saving. note: I'd credit the post on chaosgroups forum where I learned this, but their servers have crashed and the site is down due to what I can only guess is vray's popularity at siggraph last week. Peter M. Gruhn
I'm running 9 and it seems to have just worked. I never did anything and it's lovely. Weird world.
Antisthenes
i think right hemisphere deep exploration will do that? what i do is the registry trick for my PSD AI and EPS files by using files from old versions of adobe in the shell directory slightly OT for dwg and 3dm files there is a .exe installer for this in the labs. http://en.wiki.mcneel.com/default.aspx/McNeel/RhinoThumbnailViewer.html if only everybody was adding more ease and functionality rather than pulling back simple yet useful features as this. pentexplorer
Thanks Brian but it seems that it acts like the same as before..I am using max 2009 design and xp 64..and some files do not have the thumbnail while some do..is it because of a earlier max version? But then again, some of the thumbnails I am seeing are saved from max8.

As for nori's post, add "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" on top of the paragraph, cuz it wont recognized by windows without this line. Thanks for Brian's registry file, it works with XP64 SP2 and Max9 SP2. cheers - i -
Antisthenes
oh you are using vista i think that might be your problem? nobody is professionally using that in the corporate environment yet that i know and windows 7 i said do be already disapproved of by enterprise users on slashdot. maybe a format of fresh XP? maybe i will try to load Vista Lite on a spare box and see if i can get thumbs loaded because those 3 formats are pretty important also 3dm and 3ds and obj good luck, this is what happens when monopolies want to move the game, everybody is either forced to wait to catch up or stay with what works
nahidarch
i used vista 32 bit for a few days..... .pdf files showed thumnail previews..... now in vista x64 i see some .pdf are showing thumbs... some .dwg showing thumbs only in medium icons.... but it seems .max will never work.. i dont know why .max file doesnt show thumbnails by default.. and need reg edit.. what kind of process is this? did they think that thumbs are only for advanced users???
