1eo
Let me explain this with an example... I have 1 block repeated 10 times... In SketchUp I have a nice comand where I can chose one or any amount of those blocks.... "let say 3"! press (unique) and those 3 blocks become a new block with a different name (all 3 blocks have the same new name). So later I can edit that group of three separate from the other 7 ... Simple enough, so how can I do that in Autocad 2004 Regards, leo
STRAT
yeah, SketchUp's good like that. dunno how you'd effectivly do it in autocad. i guess you could do it this way - * reference your 10 blocks as you first describe. * then say you wanted the middle 3 to be individual, explode block number 3 and re-create a new block of it * now delete original blocks 4 and 5 * and copy/reference 2 new blocks of block 3 in their place. Videha
hi in ADT you have a comand copy block definition and assign you select the block run the comand and it asks you for a new name after that you can use edit in place to change whatever you want. ADT may not be the best BIM but for sure its autocad on steroids
Kerry Thompson
Hi Using AutoCAD 2.5, I wrote a series of lisp programs that did exactly this. At the time (pre xref) we were using blocks in the same way as we now use xrefs. We used these tools for 3D modeling - would still be useful today. The process was to place a marker in the AutoCAD database, record the block name, explode the block, increment the name, make a new block with the incremented name from the same objects. I will see if I can dig it out from my archives. Cheers Kerry
1eo
STRAT, That's exactly what I have been doing... Kerry, I have no idea what's a "lisp program".. however I magine is some type of script that will automate = "....place a marker in the AutoCAD database, record the block name, explode the block, increment the name, make a new block with the incremented name from the same objects." If that's the case and you find it in your archives, let me know Leo
mtutaj
Couldn't you group those blocks? Mike
lj_1999
Leo, did u try use Autocad Re-Define blocks method? The detail is: in your drawing make a new block with the same name with your existing block, see attachment for detail. Not sure if this is what you want. vizwhiz
Leo check This out, it might be useful for what you are doing http://www.dotsoft.com/toolpac.htm [look under "Block"] Substitute: Substitutes non-attributed blocks on existing inserts and preserves group. ** does These blocks have attributes?? ** hope This helps Thanks Randy

Surely that will redefine all existing blocks with that name won't it?
Spongebob
hi in ADT you have a comand copy block definition and assign you select the block run the comand and it asks you for a new name after that you can use edit in place to change whatever you want. ADT may not be the best BIM but for sure its autocad on steroids I don't know if you guys didn't see it but Videha gave you the exact answer you needed. I use this command almost every day to start a new block from an existing one, however I didn't realize that this could work for multiple blocks at once until I tried it today. It does work this way as well. Jeffrey
