Dave Bond
Well, This is a still for the government and being that it is "Force Protected" (meaning nothing close to buildings i.e. trees shrubs etc.), I don't know what else to do that could add that zing it needs. Poly count is over 2 mil just because of all the low poly tanks and other vehicles that they just have to have lots of in the scene. It still only takes just over 15 min to render out 3000 x 2000 pixels using VRAY and VIZ2006 so I am ok with that. Anyone got any suggestions to help? Incidentally, that's the Gov. that specs the orange color, not me! Best regards, Dave
Ray
How about a platoon of troops running in formation?
Hao La
nothing protect the building at all ? it needs some kind of radar tower, anti-rocket ,etc... Imagine you're playing a starcraft or red-alert . One more thing, the GOV allowed you to post it online ?.
notamondayfan
what about flag poles and flags? pavements? lines 4 parking? people?
Allen
Add some wear and tear to the pavement. Tire and grease marks would add a lot to the depth of the image. Also...adding some landscaping around the building would be a great addition...don't know if that's in the plans though. Also, the image IMO lacks contrast. I would change the angle of the sun and create an early morning scene...you know how the troops LOVE those early morning manuevers
Dave Bond
Well, Thanks for the responses so far! Allen - The materials you refer to dirty up are not paved roads...all gravel. (Any suggestions with gravel?) My sun is at a fairly low angle if you can see the shadows. So where should I put it? Or do I need to change the color? Maybe crank down the strength....I believe it's like 2200k now, with an HDRI for ambient occlusion fill. The comment about if the military cares, nope this is not that kind of facility that warrants security secrecy.

Just so the viewer can tell..."oh, the trucks and tanks used to park there...and then drive out this way..." Perhaps pull up Google Earth and take a look at a site that you've seen gravel at...see what it looks like on the aerial. Yeah, I saw your shadows AFTER I posted...This may be just a photoshop fix for the contrast. With the sun a such a low angle your shadows are going to be very soft at the edges. (See attached - not a great render but you can see that the shadows get fuzzier as the greater distance from their source.) Perhaps a more orange light? Test it out. It may be that your HDRI background is throwing the color off.
Dave Bond
Well...Here's what I wound up with..This will be an inset image inside the overall site composition. Comments and suggestions welcome!! Dave
Anthonyy
Dave I think you need a little bit more indirect, its just the side of the building / tanks looks a tad too dark. Also you could do with a higher res grass map. Try creating a mowed lawn effect, that should help breakup the tile of the lawn, plus you should be able to create this really easy using a gradient and blend maps. You really need a tarmac map, some lines on the roads too. Where the tanks park are likely to be concrete panels so again it will help to brake up the flat areas. How about some of the kit next to the tanks maybe fuel barells, pallets with anumitions etc. Make it look busy. You could add some signage, you know the sort, stop signs etc. Just some ideas. wilky9
I think some of your trees might be too big. I know it's not the focus of the image, but there's one trunk that is the same size as an Abrams tank! Did you models all of the vehicles or did you purchase them? Dave Bond
O.k. - Here's an updated image...Trying to get closer to what I am after. Fixed trees..desaturated a few green and yellow hues...closer to natural now.

Dave Bond
VUE5 Infinite trees/ground rendered in VUE5 3400 x 2500 in about 1hr 18mins. Then applied as a background in MAX and used a ground plane in MAX with a VRAY matte assignment. Rendered out in VRAY 3400 x 2500 in 34 mins.
