simple rotation in max not so simple

I have one big problem rotating simple line in Max. I need it to be precise and its very simple to do it in almost any 3d package but 3dsMax cant do that as much as I know.

I dare you experts in max, it looks stupid but in architectural visualization I use it a often and currently dont have solution.

I have uploaded max scene on one site but becouse i can upload only jpg, so I changed extension of file from rotate_line2.max to rotate_line2.jpg.

Just change extension back to rotate_line2.max and try to rotate line so its ortogonal.

Right click on the link and use "save target as" to download it.

If you have rotate it 42 degrees thats not correct as I sean it on your print screen.

Select vertex on one side of the line and it should have same y coordinate as other vertex if the lane is ortigonal, and it isn't the same so you didnt rotate it corectly if you have rotate it 42 degrees.

I need it to be precise.

By the way angle between line and horizontal of the top view is 41.9803 in 4 decimals and I have measured that in Autocad, but I need to do all that in max and without typing numbers.

Anyone knows any way to do that.

What are you asking? I may not know what you are looking for.

Try redrawing your spline as a flat line from 0,0,0. Then set your pivot point to 0,0,0 as well. You can then set your snaps or use your transform type-in box to get your desired angle.

If I recreate a spline at a given length -- then rotate it 45 degrees (or whatever angle) it is very accurate. You're line is not 45 degrees as drawn. If that is what you want you can reset your pivot point and rotate spline 45 degrees (or whatever) from there.

The point of all this is when I import dwg file with floorplanes and elevations in max sometimes I dont have house with rectangular ortogonal walls but one of the walls has some angle towards top or any view and I have to rotate it to complete the building and I cant do that precisly so I have holes in my model.

Is there a way to precisely rotate in max becouse in lets say Rhino the procedure is very simple.

1. select line

2. use option rotate and press on one end of the line, than on other angle and with shift it snaps to ortogonal view or without shift I can snap on any object and rotate it very precisly.

This is small scene I made for testing.

Right click on the link and use "save target as" to download it.

The procedure is the same as first file, just change extension from jpg to max.

Whats the use of angle snap if the shape is drawn in top view and his axis is ortogonal to world and shape isnt.

I cant belive that 3dsMax and now he has version 8.0 doesnt have option to rotate simple shape corectly.

I thought I was missing something but now I see it cant be done in Max.

I had a post before about this and there was no answer to my question.

Hi,

I agree with others that Max is not the best tool for architectural precision, but on the other hand, it doesn't need to be, imho. ArchiViz is a small part of it's capabilities, so I don't mind absence of 'hatch' or 'dimension lines' in it.

Look at the model: 5 walls and a floor, rotating to form a room??? Box modeling that room would take less than a minute.. Not to mention how much more cleaner the model would be. Look at the overlapping polys on angled walls.. a mess. And a heaven for some future light leaks and issues.

Stay with CAD modeling for precision, then import into Max.

my 2 cents.

Dejan,

I was only addressing Kris' question. I didn't intent to show him how to go about modeling something like that. There is more than one way to do it in Max.

I used to model in AutoCAD a couple of years ago. However, I stop doing so after I learned poly modeling in max (Editable Poly).

It really doesn't matter which software you use to do your modeling as long as it works for you.

Going back to your original question about rotating a simple line back to the orthogonal:

When you draw a freehand line in Max it automatically aligns the pivot to world space NOT to the angle of the line.

So, one workaround is to trace over the original line with a target camera (whose pivot IS aligned along its length) select the original line and enter the 'affect pivot only' in the hierachies panel. Then use the 'align' tool to align the Y axis of line to that of the camera. When you then open the rotate transform box the true angle of the line will be displayed (48.213 degrees, or whatever) ~ then just enter 0 and VOILA!

A DAMNED fiddly process, but it works.

I'll bet you never wished you asked this question now! :D

Hey Dabbler, Thats a cool idea. I dont know how i could have missed something like this. thanks for the Tip

Hey CHE, I was not referring to your post and methods at all, sorry if I offended you.

It really doesn't matter which software you use to do your modeling as long as it works for you.

Couldn't agree more on that!

That was the actual point of my post. I never meant that everybody should use box/poly modeling, but use soft they are comfortable with.

cheers

Ok, thanks everyone for your effort helping me about this.

Ernesto's way with grid would be fastest solution for second problem with a wall and room. By the way I dont need this room it was just a test scene to adress the problem so the polymodeling isnt really faster if you have wall with 147 windows and they are mostly diferent and some have arches and other crazy things. I think it would be waste of time trying to model it with polymodeling and too much effort.

Now about overlaping faces with this method I usually delete faces on sides of walls, and every wall has 2 of them so it doesnt take much time. Faces that overlaps at the top of the wall nobody ever seas becouse usually there is other wall on top of it or a roof so they are not a problem.

Considering modeling in other programs It doesnt work for me becouse I can say I am pretty good in Archicad where I did all my modeling and than export it in Max but I have much better control if I work in only one program.

Considering first problem with rotating line the fastest solution is to measure angle in acad or max and than type it manually. But thats the way I did it before and still If I use even 8 decimalls its still not correctly.

This rotation problem is so really simple for Descreet to solve and even max isnt specialized program for architectural modeling they also have software exactly for architectural modeling and thats 3dsViz. Really I doubt the situation there is diferent becouse Its almoust same as max with few advances and lots of disandvances.

Does anyone has a link for whishlist so I can write to Descreet.

Thanks again.
