interior MR

Any of the lights that you may have modeled in your 3D app. won't have any effect in MR. MR is a physically based rendering system and so any lights that you would like in the interior (or exterior) of your modeled environment need to be created as polygons and assigned the emitter material in the maxwell shader. Note, you can get very accurate lighting from this approach... search the next limit forums for information on how to model your emitters and light reflectors to suit your particular needs.

The link below gives information on creating IES accurate lights.

I would also suggest looking in the MR reference, tutorial, and documentation links page (see Techniques/Experiments section...)... link listed below...

Good luck and keep digging. You will be rewarded for your efforts.

Yes Ricardo. If that is Maxwell, then i'm the late Jim Jones

Don't know much about MentalRay but a skylight and GI turned on won't hurt in this one. If you use MR Area omni's, check your rollout and see if shadows are turned on, they are off by default. Maybe experiment a little with your camera? Try to have it 50 cm above the floor, looking straight forward so the off-look is gone...

The angle of the sun is nice, but the room needs some improvement Deano :)

Keep it up, Dennis

There's a good tutorial on the Treddi website for internal lighting using Mental Ray (based on Maya, but should relate to 3D studio OK I'd imagine). I've posted the link on the Maya thread (I've deleted the bookmark, sorry!). It's good and clear and gives you a good shove in the right direction.

Cheers

yes. with vray free you only get the vray shadows, and a vraymat material that is good for reflecting surfaces. no lights though. try puting your ceiling lights within the cans so they don't cast so much light on the ceiling. on your exterior light, make sure you have vray shadows selected and under the vray shadow params, pick area shadows, smooth surface, and try box type with a uvw size of like 20. that will soften up the shadows coming in from the window.
