ctasker
Hi I will be purchasing a workstation within the next week or two. Main work will be modelling rendering in Max/viz (vray) also working in Photoshop and ACAD so need good multitasking setup. Spec'd this one out on Komplett.ie who build the machine for you.http://www.komplett.ie/k/config.asp?ConfigSystemId=10137&Config.AllOptions=X Comes in at €2850 incl vat which is probably a little over my buget but i could probably stretch. Are there any obvious problems/conflicts with this selection of components? Main concerns are with choice of PSU and M Board, no Quadro GFX cards available on the site so i went for a high end gaming card (make sense?) AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.2GHz Socket DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR, nForce4 SLI, (Gigabyte, Asus & MSI boards available also on the site) XFX GeForce 7800GTX 256MB GDDR3, HDTV (gigabyte & gainward equivalents also listed on site) Antec Performance One P180 Miditower, Thermaltake Silent Purepower 680W (also 560W option) (Fortron/source ATX 550W alternative manufacturer option available) Zalman CNPS7700-Cu CPU-Cooler 2 X Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2 DDR-DIMM 2048MB 2-3-3-6 (4gb total) 2 X Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB SATA (mirror setup) Razer Diamondback Magma 1600dpi, Microsoft Digital Media PRO Keyboard, Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3540A, 16x, Any comments welcomed thanks
AJLynn
Only thing I'd say is, for that money, you want a Quadro video card (use a different vendor if you have to or buy it with a cheap card, or none if they'll sell it that way, and get the Quadro on Ebay) and a second DVD drive. The PSU is good - two cores suck more watts than one, but you could get away with a 550W or 560W option if it has enough amps at 12V.
ctasker
Why the second DVD drive? Am kind of nervous at the idea of ordering a used piece of fragile electronic equipment over the internet, could be in trouble if it arrived and there was a problem with it! AJLynn
Why the second DVD drive? Am kind of nervous at the idea of ordering a used piece of fragile electronic equipment over the internet, could be in trouble if it arrived and there was a problem with it! So buy a new Quadro on Ebay. Go with a seller with a high rating, get shipping insurance and use Paypal, so if you get scrod you're backed up. The 7800GTX costs so much, the difference between it and the cheapest card available, for most computer vendors, is about what it costs to buy a Quadro 3400 new on Ebay. The second DVD drive is for copying discs, or playing a music CD while working with another disc, or what have you. Doesn't have to be a DVDR. Just one of the things I think you should have when you're spending that kind of money on a computer. You should also demand something like a large picture of the Death Star on the side, like you can get from Alienware, and some vendor logo golf balls
