Kinda dumb mesh question

Sorry to post something so basic, but this is frustrating me and I can't figure it out.

I used a closed spline to make a extrude nurbs with caps set to 'regular grid' which was nice because I could make the grid work just right (the shape is irregular). I want to be able to vertex paint so I use make editable - but instead of one mesh I get a mesh for the sides of the object, with 2 child objects for the caps. How do I make these all one mesh so I can vertex paint it?

I tried turning off the caps then using close polygon hole, which makes the caps as single polys in the mesh - which I can triangulate but I can't get my nice grid.

After you have made the sweep nurbs editable, select all three parts (tube and both caps). Under the function menu, select "Connect". This will create a duplicate object with all three peices joined. Next select the new object and switch to point mode, select all points (ctrl-A to do it quick). Use the "Optomize" command under the Function menu to weld duplicate points together and create a perfect mesh.

There is a plugin that allows you to extrude along a spline, but it only works pre V9,

Michael Haller, the creator of eas is currently working on an update for v.9. Not certain when it will be available.

But I did not read 'sweep' in the original post.

9 has sweep - make sweep NURBS object and drop in the thing being swept, and the path spline, in that order, very easy.

But yeah, Connect was it, and Optimize with tolerance at 0, all my points are nice and welded. Here's something I made with it, part of a series of experiments in my thesis research:
