hkbasravi Posted November 3, 2005 Share Posted November 3, 2005 If I have an AutoCAD DWG drawing that imports into 3ds Max as a bunch of splines, is it even possible to import it as a 3D object into Max, or do I have to use the splines as references to model it in Max? STRAT Posted November 3, 2005 Share Posted November 3, 2005 sounds like you're importing an autocad 2d drawing. unfortunately they've yet to invent the 'automatic 3d drawing generator' button in max. you either need to physically draw the building in 3d in autocad first, or, as you say, use the imported splines in max as a reference to draw the 3d building. The Drew Posted November 3, 2005 Share Posted November 3, 2005 I'm rather new to 3dsmax, but could you extrude the splines upwards someway? If the walls are layed out in a 2d drawing, couldn't you find a way to extrude them upwards to about 8 ft? Sorry if I'm way off base here. BrianKitts Posted November 3, 2005 Share Posted November 3, 2005 if your walls are drawn in autocad as a closed polyline....emphasis on CLOSED.... then after you import to max, select the polyline and under your modify tab apply an EXTRUDE modifier. And, believe me, extruding ACAD lines can be a pain, even if you use the AEC Extended-> Wall tool (you still have to have good lines to use if you intend to turn them into walls). Vince Paske Posted November 8, 2005 Share Posted November 8, 2005 Another method is to assign a thickness value to your lines in auto-cad and link it into Max. The line with thickness will be brought in as a 3d face essentially, but you have to be careful regarding your face normals (you may have to apply an edit mesh modifier and flip the normals).
