Crazy Homeless Guy
we finally got our new computers in the office a couple of weeks ago. to my surprise, the IT dept finally came around, and let us go with Boxx systems with Opteron processors. after they decided to go Opteron, they priced IBM since that is where we usually purchase our hardware. the system we looked at priced out at more than $9000, and our hardware rep wouldn't give much of a price break. so, they were willing to give Boxx a try. we ordered 3 systems. we were able to load the first 2 without any problems, but the third had to be shipped back to Boxx because of hardware problems. we think it might be one of the PCI express slots, but we are not sure. i have always heard that Boxx had good support, but they were not willing to cross ship. which is understandable to some extent. they want to make sure the system is defective, but we just dropped a lot of money on 3 systems with them. anyway, here are the spec's we went with... Boxx 7400 series: dual AMD Opteron 280 (2.4 ghz) nVidia Quadro 3400 4 gigs of RAM SATA drives ...we also added 9x12 Wacom Intous tablets. i have never used a tablet before. i need to watch my caffiene consumption to make sure my hand is not to shaky. we are currently running windows xp pro, so we can't take advantage of the 4 gigs of ram, but our machines are ready when we decide to switch to a 64 bit enviroment. the IT dept is still to shaky on driver problems to make the jump. needless to say, i think our IT dept hooked us up. however we typically use our visualization machines for 3 years, so when we buy we need to make sure they are solid. Zdravko Barisic
A lot of discussions about Opterons tec....400-500$+ .... BUT, what about Pentium D 805 (2.66x2)???? It costs only ~150$ How about that? What would you do? Buy low-end dual core system NOW or waiting fall and buy Conroe?? (conroe will not be under 400$?? am I right?) And also if I buy now 945 MB, Conroe can not fit into it, then I must again biy new mobo. But 150$ for Dual core is so... Any suggestions?

IBM sent a courier to pick it up yesterday, rushed it off to their technician, and it is due back in the office tomorrow. the other complaint our IT guy had about BOXX is that they never once contacted him, he has had to contact them to get an update. First time EVER that I've read of a customer service complaint regarding Boxx. 1. If your IT guys are anything like some I've worked with, it's no surprise that reaction times are slow. 2. Boxx isn't exactly IBM. There's no excuse for poor customer service, but...... BTW, I just got the same Boxx that you folks received except I went with the FX1400. Love it, love it, love it. Sawyer
Wow I recommended Boxx for my fathers office & when they had a problem they shipped the computer out on Boxx's dime Boxx fixed it & had it back in the office the same week. No questions just fixed it and it was fine.
Crazy Homeless Guy
Boxx came thru and remedied the situation. They replaced everything, and were thourough about testing it, that is why it was taking so long. Although the speed of IBM compared to Boxx is still amazing. Basically, the crashes were so inconsistent that they couldn't pinpoint what the problem was. So they pretty well replaced all the internals to solve the problem. Crazy Homeless Guy
well, after we got our 3rd BOXX back yesterday, it was still crashing after they sent it back. they finally just built an entire new machine. it is crash free, and everything is working fine. i know others disagree with some of the things i said about BOXX in this thread, but if we were not a large company, with lots of resources for workstations, i would be really upset.
