Tony
I thought I would do something a little different for me and post a wip and get members here to help me finish it. The modeling of the house is pretty much done, except a few ridge shingles, and now comes the environment. Landscaping, sky, terrain and the like. This is a personal project so no big rush. I just want to share the process and along the way, learn a little something about the different ways to approach an exterior. I just bought Onyx Garden Suite so I plan to use all 3d trees and bushes, flowers etc. I have not had much of a chance to work with the program so I'm really looking forward to using it. I would appreciate any and all comments in setting up the scene. To start, I guess the terrain needs to be done first. Share your thoughts and ideas and I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks! oluv
such a beautiful house requires a huge park. i would suggest to model some humps and plant large trees around. don't forget to add some haze to the background to add atmospheric depth... try vray displacement along with some fur for the grass. GeraldH
Splendid modeling! ...good gawd man...have you gone and modeled each shingle? Looking forward to updates.
Tony
Thanks a lot guys. Oluv - I was also thinking of a country type setting for the house. I've always wanted to live in the Texas hill country so I"ll try a hilly terrain maybe a small creek close to the house and see how that looks. Ecastillor - I'll work on the glass when I have the enviroment in place. A little indoor lighting would look good. Gerald - Yea, I went a little overboard with the model. Everything is modeled except the brick on the basement, and I considered that. Just looks better than a bump or displacement. I'll post an update as soon as I have the terrain blocked out and see what you think. Thanks and keep the suggestions coming! Tony

Tony
MAX 7-8, and vray. One direct light for lighting .7 slight orange color. Environment light .7 white color. I used lightcache for secondary bounces. Rendered in about 6 minutes on my four- dual cpu farm. 1.2 million polys so far.

Tony
Here is an update to the image. I would like to get your thoughts on how it looks so far and what needs changing or adding. Still no background or sky working on the landscaping, which I suck at. Any suggestions? All the trees and bushes are onyx garden suite. Sorry for the low res, I haven't had much time to work on it. ballus
Excellent work Tony. Very good modelling. Just one critique: the trees are so close to the house. I would try to move them back.

Tony
All the trees and bushes are onyx garden suite. This is the first project I've used it on and I really like the program. As long as you proxy the trees, it renders out just fine. I ran a test with several thousand of the trees shown in my render without a problem. All were vray proxies and instanced in the scene. Worked without a problem! Tony
gfa2
Tony, how big was your proxy file that had the several thousand onyx trees in it? I messed around with proxying (is that a word???) some onyx trees into a scene, but I didn't have a whole lot of luck with it.
taprice
House looks great! I'd like to see one or two flowering/ornamental trees in the yard and brighten the grass up a little.
