The tutorial can be applied to Max pretty easily, just not quite as 'snap' perfect as in AutoCad ADT. It's really all about geometrical relationtionships of poly modeled segments of objects. Cloned then arrayed or moved into place in a linear or angular manner ;) Don't forget to weld verts and you may want to consider uvw unwrapping/mapping for the spiral elements. And last but not least move the objects center/axis to the center point of the full stairway on the xy plane, for easy and perfect rotations..... Newel posts, balusters, stair treads, the poly modeled arc segments of the stingers and railing....
