Radisoity Fails to Calculate

Hi all.

Something nasty has gone wrong with my model.

It crashed halfway through a render, and now i am battling to get it back up.

(Tried using previous incremental saves from before the crash, but same problem)

When I run a Radiosity calculation, it Reads Geometry, Initializes, then jumps straight to Reconstructing Scene, with a radiosity value of 0%.

Tried replacing the Sun system.

Checked all objects - other than RPC's all are set to be included in the calc.

Really hoping I don't have to re-install, since it always takes so long to get the activation codes again.

Anyone experienced this before?

Hey Geoff,

I have had this before. It happened to me when I tried to run a Rad' calc, and forgot to change the mesh settings of a huge base plate I was using for the model.

So I tried to cancel the render before it had started to actually calc the rad' solution.. you know, when its says processing etc..

The way I got around it was by first replacing the sun.. if that doesn't work, then start a brand new blank drawing, and merge in all of your old drawing.

That worked for me. Also, if you have any large objects in your scene, and a fairly small mesh, change the mesh size by object for the particular object, so that your machine isn't trying to calc a massive mesh solution.

Hope that helps..

Thanks a stack, Andy.

I had just gotten suicidal after running the Repair option in the VIZ MSInstaller and still not being able to calc.!

Ended up Merging the model sans Sun System (de-selected on Merge) and recreating the Sun in the new file. (Simply replacing it in the old file didn't do it)

Never thought I'd be happy to see it churning away at a 1 hour radiosity calc!

(Now if only I could convince the oversight that my ducking off for a swim while the machine thinks will improve productivity!) (27 C outside over here. Bit chillier over there, eh?)

Thanks again

Geoff
