muzzy
I am creating my own people library. Anybody knows how to feather the edges of an image like this attached image in Photoshop or After Effects ? simple gaussin or any type blur doesn't work... Any idea Dog is a free texture of got3d. You can download it from here http://store.got3d.com/products/11-dog-textures/index.html
STRAT
there's already a blurry edge to this image for a purpose. the alpha map will create your 'hard' edge. got the alpha map from them too? [edit] yup, alpha comes with it. try rendering it and you'll find a nice crisp edge [edit]

William Alexander
Couple of ways-they all require blurring the alpha channel. First a blur will increase outside of the original alpha mask the areas visible of the masked image/plate. In channels make a copy of the alpha set the copy channel to be a selection go back to the layers set mask to the image matching the alpha you now have a mask based on the alpha channel Just blurring the mask will be problematic sooo Blurr the mask 1-3 pixels gausian Then do a levels adjustment from the drop down menu adjust the black and white silders until you have a decent mask. They will be fairly close together and touching will clip the mask to a very harsh AA or pixelation. Option B is to take the slection made from the alpha channel and shrink or reduce it before application as an image mask to a layer image. Then blurr to your fancy...probobly not more than you reduced the selection Either way there will be some degradation of the image and many many more processes you apply to make a perfect mask...but those are getting deep into compositing techniques...LOL WDA
bjornkn
That "halo" around the object is just to make the feathered parts of the masked area contain the same colors as the object edge pixels, instead of fading to a black or white background. I often make this by cheating - I just contract the mask and feather by a pixel, invert the mask and erase. For more precise work I make a copy of the object layer behind the original. Then I apply blur to that "background" layer (must have Lock transparency off).

You can download it from here http://store.got3d.com/products/11-dog-textures/index.html Rather than blurring or feathering create a simple PS action that resizes (transforms) the layer anywhere from 1 & 5% (both up and down again, or vice versa). That will anti-alias the edge image edge with minimum distortion to the image. Needless to say, the more you transform the softer the edge will become. There's some math involved if you need to return to the exact dimensions, but if I can calculate it anyone can.
Brian Cassil
Those edges are one of the reasons I like the got3D content so much, (another reason is it's really cheap!). It reduces the halo effect when using clip-maps in rendering.
STRAT
marlin studios employs the same method
muzzy
Sorry for being little late... Photoshop action with gaussian blur and copying the blurred layer 8-10 times over solved my question.. I believe there should be a one shot plug-in or filter solution for this... Thanks again
bjornkn
You could always make it an action ?
Mat@MDI-Digital
this is the way I do it.. dulicate layer, gblur the lower layer, duplicate the lower blured layer about 7 times...job done
