a_w
Premiere is used mostly for digitizing video footage, arranging footage on a timeline with cuts and transitions between clips, and adding soundtracks. After Effects is for arranging footage on a timeline and compositing multiple video clips in a way similar to layers in Photoshop. You can also add filters/effects that are similar to Photoshop's to the video footage. A similar question was asked here: http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/showpost.php?p=84752&postcount=2 a_w

a_w
After Effects (IMO) would be overkill for your purposes. Premiere is fine. If you're looking to only convert images sequences into AVIs though, I would skip both and just use VirtualDub. Other than a donation for good karma, it's free. http://www.virtualdub.org/ Two steps (not including setting your compression) File > Open Video File File > Save as AVI a_w

STRAT
do you have max or viz? then use either it's ram player or the backround rendering method. both free. infact, the backround rendering method can be used with any 3d software.
