arkiedmund
Can anybody give me tips on how to create realistic Grasses in 3dsMAX? If possible, kindly illustrate the explain and techniques used for the following: 1. MAX's Scanline Rendering 2. vray renderer 3. Mental Ray renderer thanks for the help. ecastillor
the most realistic grass Ive managed is using vray.... use a grass texture and add a vray displacement mod.....
Ricardo Eloy
If you want, you can use Max's Hair and Fur modifier. You can create pretty decent grass with it, and is a lot faster than displacement.

Brian Cassil
This is probably the most requested tip on the forums here, maybe besides how to make good glass. Anyway, here's a VERY old thread about it http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/showthread.php?t=4066 Lots of options mentioned but one that isn't (I think) is the best IMO for realism and that is to photoshop it. arkiedmund
great link...now, how about some illustrations, I am just new to 3dsMAX, so I doubt if I could do those without any detailed descriptions. thanks.....
theqball
the new Hair modifier can create some very realistic grass rather easily, maybe not for a beginner but it is pretty simple if you don't stray to far out of the presets. attached is a sample rendering and a sample max file. used a simple plane with noise and the Ground_Grey_Dirt material added hair fur modifier and applied the tall grass preset tweaked teh number of segments to help render speed upped the hair passes to 3 for better quality (could be 1 for much faster render times) adjust scale and thicknesses for my scene rendered in MR but could easily render with same results in SL My number one suggestion when doing advanced effects like this is to composite the final image with the effect. This will save lots of time in the revision process. Personally I us combustion for this but it could be achieved in Photoshop if working with still images.
