rendering out single elements

I have seen a lot of references to rendering out certain elements apart from the final rendering then adjusting them in Pshop or some other software.

 

I have tried to figure it out, but can.

 

This is what I want to do.

 

Render the glass or wall material, etc. out as a single element, then reassemble the image.

 

I am using Max 7 with Vray free. (Is this possible with free version)

 

Could someone point me in the right direction?

i am a fan of both vray free and rendering elements. unfortunately, vrayfree does not have render elements. scanline does however. something i have done in the past, is redner a reflection pass (and whatever other elements i want) in scanline and everything else in vray. that way i get the good shadows of vray, but can tweek the reflections n stuff in ps. did you figure out how to do it with scanline? if not let me know. this is another perk in upgrading to advanced.
