Noise
I have a reasonably small model of about 3500 faces but when I open and save, it takes mintutes instead of seconds. Also, the task manager indicates that max is using 1.5 Gigs of memory, but the file is tiny. I have tried many things eg, merge into another file, stripping out each group until there is nothing left etc.. but no use. I also use Vray but, there doesn't seem to be a conflict with any other model. Has anyone experienced this before ? N
dbarc
what size is the actual max file?
Fran
This a known file bloat problem. Here's how to fix it (be warned that this will clear your Undo cache.): 1. open the Xref Objects dialog from the Files pulldown. Click the Close button. 2. Do the same with the Xref Scene dialog. 3. Type gc() in the pink edit box at the lower left corner of the workspace. Hit Enter. 4. Save your scene. It doesn't matter if you have xrefs in your scene or not. I've noticed this bloating especially when I create instances of lights.
Crazy Homeless Guy
YOU ARE A LIFESAVER!!!.....I found the topic, but I have no idea what the solution does! File went from 99 MB to 4 MB. In case anyone needs the info: open up xref object dialog and hit the close button. Do the same in xref scene. Then, in the little white dialog box in the left bottom left corner, type gc() and hit enter. -Chad http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/showthread.php?p=48270#post48270

jvlive
Yup. Helped me a lot during those max6-7 days. i noticed after the 7.5 fix didn't have that problem anymore. Recently, though, i went to this friend of mine, worked on his max 7 for a while and had this long saving problem. I tried the garbage collection trick gc() a few times but had no effect on the saving time. Took like between 1-2mins to save. Does having maps in a wireless network have anything to do with it? Wasn't able to check the file size though, got distracted or somethin....
Noise
Fran + Travis - you are a stars, thanks very much, you have saved me so much work. I've used max for years, thought I'd seen all its little tricks that it springs on people 10 minutes before a deadline ! regards Niall

Brian Cassil
I'm interested to know what version of max you were having this problem in. Like jvlive mentioned, I haven't had this problem since 7.5 was released.
Noise
Brian I am using 6. Which is interesting because we purchased max 8 over 3 months ago and still haven't received it. Neither our reseller or autodesk have an explanation. anyway regards Niall
