poly modelling newbie

i have this poly object which is very rectangular (orthagonal?) with all its divisions, extrusions, depressions. now i want one plane to be curved. i can't use mesh smooth because i want the rest of the object to remain orthagonal. i know this is simple to do with a new object and just attach it to the original poly, but i just wanna know if there's a way to do this just by editing the original object. quite some time ago i encountered this tutorial somewhere (cant find it now) related to this and it was using a mesh select modifier below a mesh smooth mod to "localize" the smooth effect to selected polygons.... pls do explain mesh select if this is indeed the way. thanks in advance.

I really appreciate the fact that you took the time to make this simple little animated image that shows the step-by-step process. What an awesome way to quickly absorb a process/technique... waaay better then filtering through pages of text.
