vray tip for those using architectural materials

this is a small tip for those who use architectural materials with Vray. i used to have to flip flop between what rendering engine displayed my material previews in order to see architectural materials and vray materials both. when one was displayed, the other was black, and vice versa.

about a month ago i realized that if you turn off the backlight feature for the architectural material, the vray material preview engine will display the material correctly in the preview material dialog.

the material i am using is gray, but it works for textured materials and what have you.

Personally I don't use non-VRay materials in any of my projects now -- unless I know for sure that I won't be using the lightcache. But one can never be sure you won't need to switch around your indirect illumination settings, so I try not to deviate from this rule.

i don't use a lot of arch materials, but i do occasionally use them. they are still in some models that i created before i was usign vray on a regular basis. even after i started using vray, i still used arch mats if i knew what i wanted to acheive, but wasn't sure how to do it with vray mats.

a fair amount of people post a question on why they can not see their materials, etc.. this was posted to provide a quick method for them.

..but, what i would like to see is someone who is using vray free to post here, and tell us if this method works for them. someone posted on the board yesterday, complaining about vray forcing their arch mats to go black.

could you test this?

You know, it is within the EULA to install viz advanced at home too.

i assume you meant vray advanced? butah no i didn't know. as far as i know chaos requires a new license purchase to install and run vray on any additional systems. even at work, i can only use my other computers as render slaves while vray is activated on my primary system.

I even didnt know that it is possible to use ArchMat w/ Vray!

I tried but I didnt see nothing or result was incorrect at all

Is there some special settings?! in Mat slot/render dialog?

well, the Vray people definetly won't recomend it, and several people say they cause errors, but I use them somewhat regylarly with no roblem. although when i use them they are no more special than a special than standard mat. maybe if you are using special features of arch mats they do not work correctly, i am not sure.

attached is a arch mat, but again it is nothing more than set to arch material, and a wood texture applied to it. nothing procederal or any of that jazz.

if you email ChaosGroup with you license details they will give you a license for you home machine.

Is there validity to this statement or am I reading it incorrectly?? Our company has three liscenses for our in house visualization team. Are you trying to say that I could get a liscense to use myself at home?

Does anyone have this arrangement as well???

you can find your architectural matts in the matlibs folder in max. you can load them into the max material editor by opening up your material map browser, check 'mtl library' under 'Browse from' and then select 'open' under 'file'. here you will find different arch mattt libraries, also, you will find the AEC templates.

enjoy
