dimopoulos_d
Use whatever grass map you have been using so far in your rendering. Then go to photoshop and fix your grass with the burn tool and brush 134.(reset your brushes if you can't find it) What do you think?
cdos00
Your grass looks great. However, I have one question. When I use the burn tool w/ 134 brush, I don't get the nice highlighting on my grass blades. How did you achieve this? If anyone else has seen a tutorial on this I would GREATLY appreciate it. dimopoulos_d
I dont know why this doesn't work for you. Maybe it depends on the way you use the brush. I must say that i use a wacom pen, and I'm not sure if that helps to get a better result. Also keep in mind that its better to use a smaller opacity on the brush, and burn the grass more than once. auvn
I guess, dimopoulos ment dodge tool, not burn tool. brush dimension might be depend on your image resolution
dimopoulos_d
No auvn. I meant burn tool. I made a little test jpg also. Burning with grass brush, over green noise in photoshop. I guess that the better the map you use in 3d the better result you get by burning....
auvn
sorry for the wrong guessing. that grass looks great dimopoulous. Can you do some screen shots to show how you do it> thanks I see, you using grass brush. .. great tip actually, combining both dodge and burn also works (might be more flexible)
dimopoulos_d
I think screenshots wouldnt help. Video would be better but thats a little difficult Actually i do nothing more than painting the area i want with the burn tool. I use 60-80% strength and burn the same spot more than once, in different direction. Just do it in small steps so that it doenst look too unnatural or wavy, and also use at least 2-3 brush sizes. The closer your grass is to the camera the bigger the brush size.
auvn
great tips dimopoulous/ grass is one of the most troublesome for me when rendering because it is almost impossible for me to control the displacement to get grass right
bully712
I don't even worry about grass in 3D. I do all my grass in Photoshop using images I found on the internet or have taken myself.
Crazy Homeless Guy
can you post the first image before you photoshopped the grass? ...for comparison. also... i reset my brushes, but i am not sure what or where brush 134 is.
Brian Cassil
Also, could you post a link to a high res image?
Ernest Burden III
can you post the first image before you photoshopped the grass? ...for comparison. also... i reset my brushes, but i am not sure what or where brush 134 is. There are a number of sets of brushes, that must be 'loaded' Why wouldn't we want them available as a default?
Chad Warner
The 134 Brush is the 3 bladed grass brush.
dimopoulos_d
Grass 134 is almost at the bottom of the brush list. Looks like grass. Look a little more, you will find it And here are the "before" and "after" jpgs, in bigger resolution.... http://www.photorealistic.net/temp/before.jpg http://www.photorealistic.net/temp/after.jpg
Brian Cassil
I just tryed playing around with it and couldn't get it to work quite right untill I switched the "range" from midtones to highlights, then I was able to get very similar results to dimopoulos. Thanks for the tip!
