Ernest Burden III
This is an online radio station (bends the concept, really) that generates 'stations' based on songs or artists you tell them you like. It's quite an interesting system. It has a database of songs that have been 'evaluated' and plays things in common with your starting position. It allows skipping tracks (yea!) and marking track like/don't like. It streams at 128kbs. The downside is it is only for US at the moment, though a short 'tryout' period may work from anywhere. If interested have a listen, report what you think. http://www.pandora.com/
ShaunDon
I had not seen this before -- this site is awesome! So many of my friends will really appreciate this. Thanks so much for sharing, Ernest! Shaun
TheAllusionisst
Ernest, Thanks buddy, that is very cool, time will tell if the playlist is limited, but it looks great. Best of all I figured if I entered someone like Robert Cray that I would get a 'No matches found' error or something, but nope, it popped right up, very cool! Thanks for a great link! Tim Nelson
Nice one. Seems to skip a lot during rendering though.
Ernest Burden III
Has anyone outside the United States managed to get the 'preview' time on the site? Just wondering.
richard@amdrendering.com
Tim is going to hate this recommendation, but I am in total love with http://www.luxuriamusic.com/. Its edgy elevator music with some samba thrown in for good measure.
Ernest Burden III
Tim is going to hate this recommendation... Because it's good because the boss says so? Well there's one good thing about my solitary existence here--I control the radio. I fed Pandora the name of every Beatles-like band I could think of and am now enjoying a great BritPop mix. Ernest Burden III
But hey thats what headphones are for. I rarely work at a client's office, but when i do everyone wants to come watch what I'm doing and tell me about how much they used to draw in college. That's another thing headphones are for. Ernest Burden III
A few thoughts on Pandora: The playlist that gets generated is not completely random. I've had my 'everybody that sounds like the Beatles' station wander into country twang and funk/soul, and it will be a short 'trend', meaning a few similar songs together. So there is clearly a mechanism to make the segues along a thread, and not just have all selections relate back to the 'seed' music. Also, I'm very happy to report that the music is not compressed, by which I mean the radio version. On a typical radio station all output is run through a compressor which equalizes the volume and may apply a heavy curve to produce a signature 'sound' for a station. Great. If I wanted the music put through a meat grinder I could do that at home. It would be like having every image in the CGA gallery run through a levels>auto, gamma >1.8 process so they all look the same. So much for artistry. You can tell that the music on Pandora is simply ripped and delivered because the volume and EQ varies a lot between songs--just like one CD to the next. Yea!
