dear all,

i was wondering if someone could advise me about 3d modeller pay. working as a 3d modeller for an architect doing mostly developpers building: eg: marketting images + planning images, film ect using viz and vray. how much should a 3d modeller expect to be pay per year in the uk/ scotland?

many thanks

All depends on your situation and experience really.

I've never worked purely as a modeller/renderer. But as an Architectural Technician with 3d rendering abilities (and working directly for a developer), you could expect to earn anywhere from just below £20K to £40K (at the very max). Working for an architect or viz firm will restrict that a little.

And, I was told by a recruitment consultant last year that working solely in viz (ie ditching the architectural detailing side of my work), the higher end of that scale would be well out of reach. So there goes that plan for me :)

The long and the short of it is, if you make yourself an essential person to have on board, a company will pay you a bit more than your current salary, within the range above. So you have to keep moving around to climb the ladder.

Well it's not an unreasonable salary expectation but then there's a lot of variables: type of experience, skill level etc.

Personally, I don't think anyone in their 30's with decent skill levels should be earning less than that. But then that's just my opinion. I know a lot do earn less, especially working for private practice architects.

On a more personal note, I can't imagine living in this city on less than £25-30K.

i stayed in falkirk for 3-4 years in the mid 90's

wages sucked in glasgow or edinburgh so i jumped and went back to manchester and got a 30% payrise straight off

there is a glass ceiling when you hit the 40% tax bracket

basically you'll never really see the big ££ advertised as it tends to be headhunting or word of mouth

if you are good you'll get what you are worth

from experience private practice don't tend to pay as they directors are usually pc/mzc illiterate and can't put a ££$$ value to 3d work in terms of them winning the bid or pulling them out of the Sh**

one of the reasons there are so many freelancers around
