Devin Johnston
My company just purchased 7 new AMD Athlon Dual Core 64 bit 4400+ machines and I've been doing some comparison tests against an Intel 3.6 GHz Pentium. So far the AMD is 37% slower than the Intel, but I'm not sure if everything is working right. I have a dual processor dual core AMD Opteron system and the task manager shows 4 processors, these Athlon systems only show one processor in the task manager, but I think they should be showing two. Can anyone help me here, I don't know if these processors are functioning correctly.
AJLynn
It should show two processors. Sounds like your vendor screwed up - this should work without modifications, but did you check the bios and check with your vendor and MB manufacturer to see if there are any bios upgrades you need for the dual? mtutaj
what motherboard, did you get, the last system I installed, I had to update the bios and now it shows 2 cpu's. some of the motherboard manufacturers, now are able to let you update the bios thru windows now which is really nice, then all you do is reboot and your good to go. Devin Johnston
It turns out it was a BIOS problem, the boards shipped with a 2.xx version and when we updated they were at 19.xx, so I guess they've been sitting in a warehouse for quite some time. Now what kind of performance are you getting relative to Intel?
Devin Johnston
The AMD system is a little more than 40% faster than the Intel 3.6 GHz 64 bit system. The AMD system is also $300 less than the Intel system, so as of right now unless Intel changes something either in their pricing or speed of their chips we will be buying all AMD systems. Devin Johnston
Sorry I don't have direct access to these machines, there only on my farm so all I can do is render benchmarking scenes and compare times. Should give the same results as cinebench though.

marvins_dad
Maxer - Who is building your machines? What brand? I'm currently looking at the Boxx machines, but wouldn't mind shopping around...and seeing as how you are in Houston, I thought I might give your vendor a look at. Devin Johnston
We are currently buying XI computers and I’ve been very happy over the past 3 years with them. I also looked at Boxx and have purchased several render boxes from them for my rendering farm. To be honest I've found that the Boxx prices are much higher than other comparably equipped systems, your paying for the name. This is why we went with XI, I could get the same system for about $500 less than what Boxx was willing to sell it for.
