wizuby
What is the best way to map a 2d tree onto a flat object in 3ds? I tried to put a photo of a tree with an alpha channel on a flat polygon, but when i cast a shadow through it, the recatangle around the outside shows up. Am I doing something wrong? How do I make it so that the polygon doesn't show up at all and only the leaves cast a shadow?
gfa2
Are you using a plane or a box? A plane would be the way to go. A box is going to have 6 faces to it, the plane only 2, so a plane wouldn't cast the other 4 faces as a shadow.

wizuby
well...that is beside the point. I am using a plane, and for some reason it is still showing the edges. I checked my alpha channel to make sure it was okay, and it was. I really don't know what is happening. I have tried everything I can think of. Any more suggestions? Ernest Burden III
Sorry, I was just being the logic police. Checked the map's edges how? I've often had maps that looked like they had black edges in the alpha, but didn't, they were almost black. I usually will do a selection that gets just the outside edge and fill it with black, to be sure. Other than that, I don;t use Max/Viz so it could be another setting. GeraldH
...a couple of things you may want to check on when dealing with mapped planes...1st be sure you actually have a map in the opacity slot...also be sure that "Specular Level" and "Glossiness" are set to 0. If you are using an image with an alpha channel, be sure that "Alpha Source" is set to "Image Alpha" good luck
Cynthia Hansen
As far as getting leafy shadows, are you using shadow maps for your light source? If so that might be the problem. try using ray traced shadows instead.Check the two images below. On with ray tracing one without. Not sure if that's what you meant tho'. As far as the edge of the rectangle showing, if it is slightly angled to the camera, sometimes that is the problem. try placing it parallel to the camera. It also can depend on what is behind the billboard (your mapped plane) i.e. if it is darker or lighter.Hope this helps.
