Basic render server..

Recommended Posts

Bit of advise please..!

I want to set up a machine purely for the task of rendering frames.. maybe animations or just stills, but basically multiple frames.

I have seen a machine with the following spec:

Quad Xeon 700Mhz Processors

- 1GB Memory

- 5 x Full Lenght PCI Slots

- 2 x 18GB SCSI Drives (Data Wiped)

- CDROM Drive and Floppy Drive

- Normal VGA,PS2,Serial, USB Ports etc

And I wanted to know if anyone had any advice on setting one of these up, and also if the above seemed like a good enough machine to churn out some frames.

If not, or if you have any experience of setting up a render farm / server, I would love to accept any adivce.

I have set up a render farm on a large network, but would quite like to do some thing that is stand alone now, and isn't reliant on everyone going home so I can steal their machines..!!

Many thanks.

Andy

IMO:

1. instead of a quad xeon 700, u could easily go with a much better performance Dual core Dual Opteron...

2. 1GB memory is nothing these days... it seems the configurations that u got for this machine is a performance requirements from 2 years ago... u need at elast 3 GB if u're running Xp, and 4 GB or more if u're running 64-bit system...

3. full length PCI - again OLD....

there are many posts around that you can study and see what kinda systems ppl are using...
