Bret Bullough
I'm having a viewport problem. For some reason my viewports in a file are not displaying right. If I go to a shaded view, my VP shows objects boyond the objects in the forground making it very difficult to to model and see whats going on , not to mention anoying. I've tried to merge the geometry into a new scene, but this doesn't work. I've tried going through options under VP config but can't seem to fix it. Does anyone have any solutions or thoughts for me? theqball
what viewport display mode are you using? D3D/OGL/Software? it might be a problem with your graphics card or driver not supporting that mode. more info about your setup will help.
Bret Bullough
I started with software wich I belive is default, then I tried switching over to OGL. Restarted Viz and the same results. I can't say I really have a good inderstanding of display drivers, I was just trying anything.
Brian Cassil
I would say try switching to direct3D, or if you have a quadro card maxtreme. Long time no see btw.
Bret Bullough
Hey Brian, It has been a while. I tried switching to Direct 3D. That didn't work. I do have a quadro card but I can't see how to switch to maxtreme. Care to elaborate?
Brian Cassil
You need to go to Nvidia's website and download and install the latest maxtreme driver, it should then automatically set itself as the default driver for viz. You will notice dramatic speed improvments but I'm not sure if it will fix this specific problem.
Bret Bullough
Well I don't think it was related to video card drivers. I had to rebuild the scene one chunk at a time. I never found out why it was doing this, but I had it down to three windows. If I tried to merge all three at once it would mess up my display. if I merged those same three windows one at a time the display was ok. I would still like to update my driver though, Brian I went to Nvidias web site found one that is certified for MAX by discreet(I'm on Viz 2005 -I assume it would work on this platform as well). It was #45.28. however, when I went to install it. It told me it was older than the one installed currently. I'm running a card thats about 2.5 yrs old. On that same page they have a list of additional drvers , up to 71.84. But they don't state weather or not they are certified also. Any opinions on wich one would be best? theqball
Hi Bret, Since you said this originally occurred in software mode I don’t believe this to be a graphics card problem. But regardless you really should run max or viz in software mode, especially if you have a nice quadro card. You haven’t really been using the power of your card yet and have only been relying on the cpu for viewport performance (which is bad). Here’s a brief description of the different display modes and which one to use on my web site… http://www.theqball.com/tutorials/d3d-display-mode/ For the nvidia driver you should be using something higher than 70 really and there were significant improvements at 52 and 70 if my memory is correct. Generally the latest drivers are fine to us and the nice thing about XP now is it’s easy to roll back if you have troubles. I would recommend installing the 77.18 found here http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_77.18 As for your problem it sounds like some type of a weird bug and if possible it would be great if you could log it here for us… http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=5600504&linkID=5573345 if it is not reproducible on generic geometries then it would be best if you contacted your local reseller to submit the file and bug report together with repro steps. It’s import to note that the problem occurred in software mode as this isolates the problem for us. Thank you,
Brian Cassil
http://www.nvidia.com/object/maxtreme_7.00.03.html There's the link to the latest maxtreme driver... It's actually not so much a driver as it is an application, so, take Shane's advice on the driver you use but also install maxtreme.
Bret Bullough
I'm having trouble installing the Maxtreme driver. I'm running Viz 2005. I can't follow the instructions given in the help file that installs with Maxtreme. --------------------------------------------------- 2. Start 3ds max 7 or [VIZ 2005], which is the application from which you will access the NVIDIA MAXtreme Release 7 driver. Yada Yada Yada 7. Click [Custom] and then choose the NVIDIA MAXtreme driver (MAXtreme7.drv) from the list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- When I'm under Prefrences>Viewports>Choose Driver... The custom selection is greyed out. I cant seem to get past this to choose Maxtreme as an option. Step 2 tells me that it should be supported under Viz 2005. I'm using a Quadro4 980 XGL card. Have I missed something?
