sketch to CG

perhaps it's easier to do it the other way around.

Make a cg that's close enough to the sketch and then let them sketch over the CG image, because you never know how accurate the perspective is in a sketch, but with cg it's perfect.

but maybe im missing a point here.

I have done this before, never for a client all just myself studying, but you just have to become a good estimator to get this done. Estimate the size of one object which you are pretty sure of the size of like a window or the a tree or something, then use that size as reference estimating distance from view and stuff... Good luck!

If it is just a sketch done freehand (without first setting up the perspective), then it will never match.

From a long history of hand perspective, I 100% agree.

However--look at the SketchUp site. They have some tutorilal videos, one or two show how to make a model out of a photo (your sketch instead). Its camera mapping, do-able in other apps, easily in SU.

that's what i was thinking of. that bird house demonstration they have. not totally accurate, but i think you can get good results out of the approach. i usually just eye-ball it with the masses, then compare in ps, and make the adjustments. then add the detailed stuff.
