oooo, i want a go :)

1) come from artistic family, i've always been drawing and painting as long as i can remember

2) left school at 17 (about 13 years ago) with 4 basic GCSE exams

3) joined local firm of architects as apprentice going to college 1 day a week to earn basic qualification. this went on for 2 years. i learned autocad in this 2 year period.

4) one of the firm's partners decided to leave and set up his own computer graphics firm (still working on 286's at the time). so i went with him.

5) stayed there for 5 or 6 years acting as a cgi beurux for local firms.

6) firm collapsed about 5 years ago and i moved to big firm of UK architects doing all their in-house cgi. been there ever since.

My father is a furniture designer and my closest uncle is an architect and I would always draw that type of stuff when I was a kid so I pretty much knew I wanted to do something design orientated. Never drew animals n stuff. You're not allowed to design those.

Then I...

  • Finished highschool.
  • Started studying surveying (the chance of huge money in mine surveying got me on to that one but I absolutley hated it and left after 8 weeks).
  • Went back to England for a few years.
  • Came back to Australia and did a Building Design Diploma (pretty much a drafting course with extra colouring in).
  • Worked during the last year of that diploma for a residential builder.
  • After that, worked for an architect on train stations and highschools, and other boring governmental buildings.
  • Now studying Architecture full-time.

Ha, I think Nisus gets the biscuits, but heres a two penneth:

Started out as a computer science student and then went to work for a research company building automonous robots for uni researchers. Learnt lots of fun stuff about laser scanning, robot navigation, behavioural AI and how to build datagloves and other add ons for early VR and telepresence systems (this was around 1991).

Worked with some small start/up companies and had bouts of washing dishes and other such jobs when discovered startup companies are not allways the most stable income - but did get to learn a lot about the importance of cashflow and project management etc.. Eventually ended up working at Salford Uni, researching VR and Construction and got to learn about about how buildings were designed and made, as well as interface and architectural design and design processes...

Since then - mixture of freelance and contract work as information systems and visualisation developer. Oh and after far far too long i learned how to programm and some stuff about maths...(Ahem). These days work with a cool team of people largely on heritage visualisation, though still with some web, info system and technology consulting roles.. Fun stuff indeed!!

Gotta try to catch up to nisus on the post count somehow...

- High School (didn't apply myself)

- 1 semester of Mechanical Engineering (didn't like it)

- Bachelor of Industrial Design degree ('small stuff', love it)

- Master of Community Planning degree ('big stuff', love it)

- Designer with large Southeastern (USA) A&E firm

- In-house 3D and Visualization specialist with same firm

- Left firm (burned out)

- Freelance + adjunct teaching at nearby university

Never used 3D prior to graduate school (the 286's were a little slow anyway), learning rendering and sketching techniques with pencils, pens, and markers, while trying to explain to my parents that I wasn't just "coloring". redface2.gif
