Transparent raytrace models

Im new to 3DS Max so sorry if this is in the manual I assume it is. Ive been trying out some models with raytraced textures with an environment map picture background just to see what they are like. The objects themselves are supposed to be obscure and they do act like that in terms of blocking each other from view. But the bcakground image shows through the dark shadows of the models. At first I thought it was a reflection but it isnt - its just the background showing through. Why is this? It doesnt seem to happen by the way when I use models textured in non-raytraced textures!

Are my ratraced textures missing an element by any chance. They have a falloff map associated with them but the map just looks black. Is this right? If so any way to update the falloff map?
