baldrick1
Can someone provide me with information to correct this problem that i'm having with vray materials. When i create a 3d face in Cad and import it into Max and add a vray material to the 3d face, the object is only seen on one side. i sure it has to do with flipping normals or something. To over come the problem, i rotate the 3d face 180 degrees in cad so that i can see it in max. This becomes a tedious task and time consuming if there's alot of 3dfaces in a scene. is there a solution to this question? thanks for your time
3D_IC
I think this should sort out the problem. In Material editor select the vray material you applied to the face and scroll down to "options" tab. In here tick the box saying double-sided. The faces may still be single sided in the viewports, but will be double sided on rendering. The only way i know to get double sided objects in viewports is to model in solids. hope this helped
baldrick1
thanks 3d IC Your response was what i am doing. changing 3dfaces to solids just increases the number of faces which in't all that bad,it just makes the day longer if you need to manipulate the (3dface) later if the 3dface was changed to solids. much appreciated with the response though! rjgardner
It's to do with the direction you create your faces. If you create your 3dface in an anti-clockwise direction your normals should be on the correct side. Give it a go, I'm pretty sure that's the correct way. Cheers! Joelp
Richard is correct about the direction in which you draw the lines in AutoCAD, You can also flip the normals of specific faces inside of the Edit Mesh Modifier. There is also the Normal Modifier.
Tim Saunders
Yeah, I've also wondered tabout this. If I have a plane for instance and put a map on it, even though it is 2 sided, you only see it on one side in the viewport which is different from standard materials that are 2 sided. Seems to render fine though. But I have had some vines on a plane on a large project with lots of green screen and vines, and it helps to be able to see the vines in the viewport before you render. If I know the plane is there, but can't see the material, If it bothers me that much, I just select all those planes and add the normal modifier. jkletzien
"it helps to be able to see the vines in the viewport before you render" You should be able to just right click on the viewport name, configure, and hit force two sided. This won't do anything for rendering - (especially reflections/refractions) and it can get confusing if you're trying to flip normals in that viewport, but at least should (at least with standard) still be able to see the maps (if they're triggered to do so in the Material editor). Brolloks
I used to get the same problem with Acad files in Max or Viz. I usually fixed it with the 2 side option as discussed or Select the object and go to sub object level "Polygon". select the whol object and click "Unify" and " Flip" nder Surface Properties. Usually works for me
