Tommy L
Does anyone have alot of experience with ipod like gadgets? I want an ipod/creative/iriver but dont know which to buy. I need it for data storage and transfer (all sorts of files) as much as for a portable mp3 player. The price doesnt matter, any advice warmly welcomed! Thanks, Tom. ShaunDon
I just got a 60gb iPod a month ago and I love it. It mounts as a hard drive, so you can drop files in the data folder on the device, and as far as interface goes nothing really beats Apple. It's nice to have friends over and leave the iPod out playing music so anyone can pick it up and drop new tracks into the queue. I also like that I can put my work portfolio, including animations, on the iPod and always have them with me. Nothing cooler than sitting on a plane and being able to whip it out when someone asks me what I do for a living. I mean, for $400 you're mostly paying for that chique value. But I'm not above it. I really can't speak on the other players as I was pretty set on the iPod for its feature set, ease of use, and the innumerable third-parties who manufacture accessories for it. But there's a good reason it was the top product of 2005! Think I read that on Slashdot anyway. Good luck! Whatever you get, having your whole music collection in your back pocket never ceases to be cool. Shaun
Tommy L
Thanks mate, Ive been looking at the iRiver H340. Ive heard that the ipods can be defective? But i think maybe its because if some one has onethat goes wrong they'll never stop moaning about it...Anyone else?
AJLynn
My sister has one with a battery that gave out after a year or two, and I had to get mine replaced under warranty. Only other complaint is if you plug it into a good stereo system the sound quality will be... flat. Worse than some other ones I've used. But overall I like them. There are products out there with better technology, but, well, they're not Ipods Get a protective cover, the shiny parts scratch.
ShaunDon
Ive heard that the ipods can be defective? God I hope not, but obviously one man's experience can't confirm/deny it. But Apple's support is really good, and you can walk into any Apple Store and have a tech look at it on the spot, or they'll send it out from there if it needs repairs. On the batteries, Apple got sued for misrepresenting the fact that the battery (like all others) will dissipate in capacity over time. By the two year mark, they expect you'll want to replace it as it will hold about a half charge. The pod has to be sent back to Apple and the replacement fee is $65. They make sure you know that upfront now. Shaun
Tommy L
Thanks, I reckon im gonna join the crowd and get an ipod. Its a bit annoying that once the music is on there its changed into a format that cant be re-transferred onto a pc though, is that right?

Sawyer
I have to say I have found iTunes very buggy. Keeps crashing a few times a day. Other than that I have had a great time with the ipod.
AJLynn
Careful, iPods will make you deaf: http://apnews.excite.com/article/20060202/D8FGOPAGF.html Apparently, unlike every other audio product on the market, the iPod has the ability to be too loud. ShaunDon
http://www.redchairsoftware.com/ If you end up not liking iTunes, check these guys out. Their software will let you transfer songs on and off the pod in Windows Explorer and let you play the files back on a computer. I've made a point to try to get into iTunes and play my music always off the iPod so I can start rating tracks as I listen and down the road play with playlist generators. But if you don't want to change the setup on your computer, you don't have to. Enjoy! My Dad got a nano yesterday as a promotional gift from work. I feel like suddenly he's in with the hip kids riding the 6 train, it's disorienting. Shaun

Tommy L
Well, I got myself a Sony Vaio Pocket (40gb). I got it second hand from 'computer exchange' for £165 and am well chuffed. Its ace.
Jeff Mottle
I have a Creative Zen Touch as well and also use the software from Red Chair Software. Not sure about now, but at the time the Touch had the best sound of any according to many reviews and of course the battery life is much better than any iPOD at the time. When I travel I often need 8-15 hours of continuous play, which none of the iPODs could do. The drawback with Creative is they are VERY bad at releasing drivers. It took them a year to release the drivers for the Touch which would allow you to play subscription music services. One thing to check before you buy, assuming it matters to you, if if it can play subscription music services or audible files. The trend seems to be they want you to buy a new unit rather than keeping the one you have and waiting for firmware upgrades.
