henrybroadhurst
Hello, I would really appreciate some tips on what can be done to work with autocad files in maya-can they be converted into something that maya can use? perhaps with a little scripting/ mel tricks or perhaps some conversion software from the net or is this just a dead end? Cheers, H
jonosf
Maya has a built in DWG/DFX translator (I havent used it much) but go to Windows> Settings/Prefs> Plug-in Manager and click the "load" button for dwgTranslator.mll and you should be able to Import a dxf file. Good luck! -jono

daviniti
with Maya 8 this is already built in, but I still cant get it to import correctly. Did you have any luck?
e3di
Yes, you need to download directconnect from autodesks website.
stylEmon
Even that directConnect works like CRAP. Maybe there are a couple advances with Maya 8, but I have just resorted to downloading a plug-in that allows you to use the DWG translator in Maya 7.0.1 and later. That translator works better with CAD files than MAX does! I found the plug in on http://www.Highend3d.com
e3di
Wierd, I use every day an it works fine. Although all I use it for is importing dwg files to use as reference. Maybe if you are trying to work with the files it is different.
stylEmon
are you using 8? I noticed that with 7.0.1, the CAD files come in incomplete, or very unorganized. Many lines are in the outliner but not visible. That's why I resorted to the plug-in. Also, Yes, I like to work directly from the CAD lines. Less work, better...
